Secretion of Alpha Subunit of Glycoprotein Hormones by Pituitary Adenomas

The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, 1976
In 60 patients with pituitary adenomas, the serum concentration of the alpha subunit of the glycoprotein hormones (serum alpha) was measured by a sensitive and specific radioimmunoassay. Five patients had markedly elevated serum alpha prior to therapy (range 14.5-23.0 ng/ml).

Glycoprotein hormones: glycobiology of gonadotrophins, thyrotrophin and free α subunit

Glycobiology, 1995
Chorionic gonadotrophin and pituitary luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone comprise the family of glycoprotein hormones, which regulate major metabolic and reproductive functions of the body. These are heterodimeric glycoproteins composed of a common alpha subunit and a hormone-specific beta subunit.
