Citizen policy entrepreneurship in UK local government climate emergency declarations

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 40, Issue 6, Page 950-971, November 2023., 2023
Abstract Policy entrepreneurship theory seeks to explain how actors, institutions, actions and interactions influence policy makers and policy outcomes; however, the role of citizens in this process remains largely unarticulated. Adopting a conception of policy entrepreneurship as a (distributed) pattern of agency rather than the actions of an ...

Accounting for bias in prevalence estimation: The case of a globally emerging pathogen

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 60, Issue 9, Page 2007-2017, September 2023., 2023
These results highlight the importance of using robust inferences to inform disease risk assessments and to efficiently allocate limited resources during mitigation strategies of infectious diseases. The methods used here can be applied to a wide range of host–pathogen systems, and will be of interest to both researchers and practitioners aiming to ...

Does the loss of diadromy imply the loss of salinity tolerance? A gene expression study with replicate nondiadromous populations of Galaxias maculatus

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 9, Page 2219-2233, May 2023., 2023
Abstract The recurrent colonization of freshwater habitats and subsequent loss of diadromy is a major ecological transition that has been reported in many ancestrally diadromous fishes. Such residency is often accompanied by a loss of tolerance to seawater.

Large‐scale movement patterns in a social vulture are influenced by seasonality, sex, and breeding region

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 13, Issue 2, February 2023., 2023
Griffon vulture home‐range sizes and home‐range fidelity are affected by seasonality, sex, and breeding region. Vultures tend to move more during spring and summer, and females showed higher home‐range sizes than males, but lower home‐range fidelity.

Short‐distance nocturnal migration in an island endemic bustard

open access: yesIbis, Volume 164, Issue 4, Page 1145-1159, October 2022., 2022
Migratory birds typically fly long distances in response to large‐scale seasonal climate variation. However, most migratory species are partial migrants, and some fly only short distances, for example to take advantage of suitable feeding conditions during the non‐breeding season.

Non‐breeding distribution and at‐sea activity patterns of the smallest European seabird, the European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus)

open access: yesIbis, Volume 164, Issue 4, Page 1160-1179, October 2022., 2022
Determining the non‐breeding distribution and activity patterns of migratory animals is essential to understand the trade‐offs across breeding, moulting and migratory periods and to evaluate the differential levels of exposure of these animals to threats throughout the year.

Natural selection favours drought escape and an acquisitive resource‐use strategy in semi‐arid Mediterranean shrubs

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 36, Issue 9, Page 2289-2302, September 2022., 2022
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Natural selection is the major force driving adaptive evolution in natural populations, varying in strength, direction, and form through space and time, especially in highly variable environments such as Mediterranean ecosystems.

Who should “do more” about climate change? Cultural theory, polycentricity, and public support for climate change actions across actors and governments

open access: yesReview of Policy Research, Volume 39, Issue 4, Page 468-485, July 2022., 2022
Abstract Under a polycentric approach to climate change, action is taken at different scales and across all levels of government and sectors of society. Some scholars have argued that such an approach is the best lens to view the governance of climate change and that a polycentric approach has advantages in addressing collective‐action problems ...
