Yet among the Damara pastoralists with whom I work, people now increasingly describe feeling shame (taob) when they ask for food. Freedom, as a concept and a value, presents limited prospects for anthropological comparison. The study of enslavement, much neglected in attempts to develop an anthropology of freedom, shows that freedom has been imagined by the enslaved as the opposite of their condition only under particular circumstances.

Abstract This article explores the distribution, syntax, and information structure of XVS clauses in the narrative text and the reported speech of a thirteenth‐century Old Catalan chronicle, the Llibre dels Fets. It is shown that XVS occurs mainly within reported speech and in embedded clauses.
