Palaeopathological analysis of a Chilean gomphothere (Proboscidea: Gomphotheriidae)
International Journal of Paleopathology, 2019Re-evaluate the pathological lesions found on a gomphothere recovered from Quebrada Quereo (Late Pleistocene), Coquimbo region, Chile (31º55'41" S, 71º34'43" W, 20 masl).227 axial and appendicular specimens from a young adult male individual (SGO.PV.267).Macroscopic and radiographic analysis.Pathological conditions identified included asymmetries of a ...

The first Choerolophodon (Proboscidea, Gomphotheriidae) skull from China
Science China Earth Sciences, 2011Here we report the first discovery of a relatively complete skull of Choerolophodon from the late early Miocene Dalanggou quarry of Linxia Basin, Gansu Province in China. The skull is low and elongated, with two enamel-less and outward-and-upward curved incisors and the choerolophodont molars.

Anancinae (Proboscidea: Gomphotheriidae) from the Middle Awash Valley, Afar, Ethiopia
Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, 1985ABSTRACT Late Miocene to early Pliocene gomphothere proboscideans (Family Gomphotheriidae: Subfamily Anancinae) from the Middle Awash Valley, Ethiopia, were recovered throughout 350 m of strata, representing some 1½ to 2 my. Specimens referred to the genus Anancus from the Adu-Asa and Sagantole Formations are more complete and more extensive than any ...

The archaeo-paleontological site of Pilauco (southern Chile) has one of the richest Late Pleistocene mammal records of the northern Chilean Patagonia, with at least nine forms dominated by gomphothere remains. This site has a complex taphonomic history due to postdepositional processes that affected the integrity, frequency, and distribution of the ...

Diet of rinchothere (Proboscidea, Gomphotheriidae,RhynchotheriumSpecies) of Taxco, Guerrero, México
The Southwestern Naturalist, 2015Abstract The diet of a gomphothere (Proboscidea, Gomphotheriidae, Rhynchotherium species) from the Mexican Pliocene was determined using carbon and oxygen stable isotopes relationships in dental enamel. The analyses demonstrated that this individual exclusively fed on C3 plants, similar to some specimens found in Florida, United States.

Abstract Two new records of gomphotheriid proboscideans, one identified as Rhynchotherium and the other as Cuvieronius, are reported in Mexico. Both records are in the southwesternmost points of their known distributional range. The remains of both genera consist of molars and tusks.

The South American gomphotheres were previously classified in three genera and three species. Two biogeographic corridors are recognized for the dispersion of gomphotheres in South America. Cuvieronius hyodon was found mainly in the highlands and west to the Andes, and Stegomastodon platensis and Haplomastodon chimborazi were found in lowlands. The aim

There is an abundant fossil record of the family Gomphotheriidae in Chile, which is en- tirely ascribed to the late Pleistocene. Despite this, the lack of taxonomically diagnostic material has lead to an extended discussion, which has not reached a consensus regarding the number of forms of gomphotheres effectively present.
