Ethanol: A Gonadal Toxin in the Mature Rat of Both Sexes

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1980
A diet containing 5% ethanol, accounting for 36% of the total calories or a similar diet in which dextrimaltose was isocalorically substituted for ethanol, was fed to sexually mature adult male and female rats to determine whether alcohol feeding of such animals could produce gonadal failure as it does in weanling animals.

Maturation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Negative Feedback System

Endocrinology, 1969
A series of experiments was performed in order to determine the age at which circulating steroids from the ovaries first begin to suppress gonadotropin secretion. Female Sprague- Dawley rats were bilaterally ovariectomized or sham-operated within 24 hr of birth and sacrificed at 5,10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 75 days of age.

Nonneoplastic Gonadal Testosterone Secretion as a Cause of Vaginal Cell Maturation in Streak Gonad Syndrome

Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation, 2010
Endocrine studies were carried out on 3 patients with streak gonad syndrome, 2 of whom had slight proliferative vaginal smear patterns, and the 3rd had slight hirsutism with increased muscle mass but an atrophic type vaginal smear pattern. Simultaneous sampling of peripheral, adrenal and streak gonadal venous blood revealed mildly increased ...

Induced Maturation of Gonads in Aplysia punctata Cuvier

Nature, 1967
STUDIES of development and reproduction in marine invertebrates are usually limited to the natural breeding seasons of the animals concerned. In order to overcome this time restriction with regard to Aplysia punctata (Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia), and in the hope of establishing a method which might be applicable to other animals, we tried to induce ...

Bulimia nervosa and disorders of gonadal differentiation and maturation

International Journal of Eating Disorders, 1992
A case series of four patients with disorders of gonadal differentiation and maturation who subsequently developed bulimia nervosa is described. To the authors' knowledge these are the first reports of bulimia nervosa in conjunction with preexisting gonadal pathologies.

Sexual Maturation and Differentiation: The Role of the Gonadal Steroids

1978
Publisher Summary The development of the neuroendocrine system involves not only the maturation of the individual components and their abilities to produce hormones but also the acquisition of the functional capacity of the brain and pituitary to be influenced by target gland hormones.

Gonadal transcriptome analysis of wild contaminated female European eels during artificial gonad maturation

Chemosphere, 2015
Since the early 1980s, the population of European eels (Anguilla anguilla) has dramatically declined. Nowadays, the European eel is listed on the red list of threatened species (IUCN Red List) and is considered as critically endangered of extinction. Pollution is one of the putative causes for the collapse of this species. Among their possible effects,

Maturation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in the male lamb: A review

Psychoneuroendocrinology, 1983
We have studied the activity of the hypothalamic--pituitary--gonadal (HPG) axis in the male ovine fetus and newborn lamb. Circulating levels of gonadotropins, prolactin, cortisol (F), testosterone (T), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate and delta 4androstenedione (delta 4A) were measured in fetal plasma in the third trimester of gestation and the ...

Maturation and Physiology of Hypothalamic Regulation of the Gonadal Axis

2016
In mammals, maturation of the gonadal axis at puberty appears to be timed by an increase in tonic gonadotropin release from the anterior lobe of pituitary gland, where the synthesis and release of gonadotropins, such as the follicle-stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone, are stimulated by the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) released from ...

Gonadal steroid neuromodulation of developing and mature hypothalamic neuronal networks

Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2014
This review highlights recent findings regarding the diverse mechanisms through which gonadal steroid hormones modulate neuronal structure and function. In males, estradiol aromatized from testosterone in the perinatal period permanently masculinizes several components of mammalian brain circuitry.
