Effect of infantile stimulation on gonadal maturation of rats

Journal of Psychosomatic Research, 1968
Abstract The present study investigated the effect of preweaning handling on gonadal maturation of rats. Analysis of the results indicated that the apparent variation between handled and non-handled animals was primarily due to between litter differences. The findings of the study emphasize the importance of considering differences between litters in

Maturation of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal Negative Feedback System

Endocrinology, 1969
A series of experiments was performed in order to determine the age at which circulating steroids from the ovaries first begin to suppress gonadotropin secretion. Female Sprague- Dawley rats were bilaterally ovariectomized or sham-operated within 24 hr of birth and sacrificed at 5,10, 15, 20, 30, 40 and 75 days of age.

Neuropeptide Y in the human prenatal and mature gonads

Neuropeptides, 1996
In the present paper we have examined the distribution and identity of neuropeptide Y (NPY) immunoreactivity in the prenatal and mature human gonads. Tissue specimens were obtained from prenatal gonads (gestational age < 42 weeks) of induced abortions, premature birth and stillbirths.

Nonneoplastic Gonadal Testosterone Secretion as a Cause of Vaginal Cell Maturation in Streak Gonad Syndrome

Gynecologic and Obstetric Investigation, 1986
Endocrine studies were carried out on 3 patients with streak gonad syndrome, 2 of whom had slight proliferative vaginal smear patterns, and the 3rd had slight hirsutism with increased muscle mass but an atrophic type vaginal smear pattern. Simultaneous sampling of peripheral, adrenal and streak gonadal venous blood revealed mildly increased ...

Induced Maturation of Gonads in Aplysia punctata Cuvier

Nature, 1967
STUDIES of development and reproduction in marine invertebrates are usually limited to the natural breeding seasons of the animals concerned. In order to overcome this time restriction with regard to Aplysia punctata (Gastropoda, Opisthobranchia), and in the hope of establishing a method which might be applicable to other animals, we tried to induce ...

Gonadal steroid neuromodulation of developing and mature hypothalamic neuronal networks

Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2014
This review highlights recent findings regarding the diverse mechanisms through which gonadal steroid hormones modulate neuronal structure and function. In males, estradiol aromatized from testosterone in the perinatal period permanently masculinizes several components of mammalian brain circuitry.

Influence of melatonin on gonad maturation inLineus lacteus (Heteronemertini, Lineidae)

The Journal of Experimental Zoology, 1996
The annual reproductive cycle of Lineus lacteus is regulated by photoperiod and thermoperiod. Gonad maturation depends on a gonad-inhibiting hormone (GIH) secreted by the cerebral ganglia, in which melatonin was also observed. Results in the worm showed that melatonin concentrations seemed to vary at the two most appropriate times of the year (spawning

Bulimia nervosa and disorders of gonadal differentiation and maturation

International Journal of Eating Disorders, 1992
A case series of four patients with disorders of gonadal differentiation and maturation who subsequently developed bulimia nervosa is described. To the authors' knowledge these are the first reports of bulimia nervosa in conjunction with preexisting gonadal pathologies.

Ethanol: A Gonadal Toxin in the Mature Rat of Both Sexes

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1980
A diet containing 5% ethanol, accounting for 36% of the total calories or a similar diet in which dextrimaltose was isocalorically substituted for ethanol, was fed to sexually mature adult male and female rats to determine whether alcohol feeding of such animals could produce gonadal failure as it does in weanling animals.

Circannual Rhythms of Gonadal Maturation in Female Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Journal of Biological Rhythms, 1991
Individually identified, 2-year-old female rainbow trout were maintained for up to 51 months on a constant schedule of 6 hr light and 18 hr darkness (LD 6:18), constant temperature (8.5-9.0°C), and constant feeding rate. The fish exhibited free-running circannual rhythms of gonadal maturation and ovulation, which were self-sustaining for up to three ...
