The Accuracy of the Demographic Inferences Shown on Google's Ad Settings [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Google's Ad Settings shows the gender and age that Google has inferred about a web user. We compare the inferred values to the self-reported values of 501 survey participants. We find that Google often does not show an inference, but when it does, it is typically correct.

CeiTEA: Adaptive Hierarchy of Single Cells with Topological Entropy

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
CeiTEA, a novel hierarchical clustering algorithm based on topological entropy, effectively captures complex structures underlying data. By constructing an adaptive multi‐nary partition tree, CeiTEA reveals hierarchical structures and local diversifications, outperforming existing methods in clustering accuracy and consistency and providing the ...

Validation of a Deep Learning Model for Diabetic Retinopathy on Patients with Young-Onset Diabetes

open access: yesOphthalmology and Therapy
Introduction While many deep learning systems (DLSs) for diabetic retinopathy (DR) have been developed and validated on cohorts with an average age of 50s or older, fewer studies have examined younger individuals.

Barren plateaus in quantum neural network training landscapes

open access: yesNature Communications, 2018
Gradient-based hybrid quantum-classical algorithms are often initialised with random, unstructured guesses. Here, the authors show that this approach will fail in the long run, due to the exponentially-small probability of finding a large enough gradient

Private Information Disclosure from Web Searches. (The case of Google Web History) [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2010
As the amount of personal information stored at remote service providers increases, so does the danger of data theft. When connections to remote services are made in the clear and authenticated sessions are kept using HTTP cookies, data theft becomes extremely easy to achieve.

Toward High‐Performance Electrochemical Energy Storage Systems: A Case Study on Predicting Electrochemical Properties and Inverse Material Design of MXene‐Based Electrode Materials with Automated Machine Learning (AutoML)

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates PyCaret's AutoML framework for predicting the electrochemical and structural properties of MXene‐based electrodes, including intercalation voltage, capacity, and lattice constants. AutoML streamlines workflows, ranks key elemental descriptor, and enables inverse molecular formula prediction based on performance targets.

Manipulating Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics: simple, easy and tempting [PDF]

open access: yesDelgado Lopez-Cozar, Emilio; Robinson-Garcia, Nicolas; Torres Salinas, Daniel (2012). Manipulating Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics: simple, easy and tempting. EC3 Working Papers 6: 29 May, 2012, 2012
The launch of Google Scholar Citations and Google Scholar Metrics may provoke a revolution in the research evaluation field as it places within every researchers reach tools that allow bibliometric measuring. In order to alert the research community over how easily one can manipulate the data and bibliometric indicators offered by Google s products we ...

Incorporating economic multipliers in a bid adjustment algorithm for public food procurement decision making

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
Abstract We present an adjusted bid price mechanism that incorporates economic multiplier effects in public food procurement decision making. Under Input–Output model assumptions, the algorithm estimates enhanced tax revenues to state governments through multiplier effects associated with in‐state supplier purchasing.
