SEASONAL OCCURRENCE, MORPHOLOGY, AND OBSERVATIONS ON THE LIFE HISTORY OF GORDIUS DIFFICILIS (NEMATOMORPHA: GORDIOIDEA) FROM SOUTHEASTERN WISCONSIN, UNITED STATES

Journal of Parasitology, 2002
A total of 584 adult nematomorphs, Gordius difficilis, was collected from 2 man-made ponds and their overflow stream in southeastern Wisconsin. Ponds were surveyed throughout the year, but all free-living worms were found during July-August of 1996, July-September of 1997, and June-August of 1998.

Mitochondria in Obliquely Striated Muscles of the Horsehair Worm Gordionus alpestris (Nematomorpha, Gordioidea) with Structural Organization Typical of Cells with Energy-Intensive Processes

Biochemistry (Moscow), 2019
The ultrastructure of mitochondria in the flattened circomyarian fibers of the horsehair worm Gordionus alpestris (Nemathelminthes) was examined. In contrast to the previously published data, we showed these mitochondria to be giant elongated organelles that densely fill the central cytoplasmic space of the ribbon-like muscle fibers.

Knot formation reduces water exchange by adult males of the hairworm,Paragordius varius(Nematomorpha: Gordioidea)

Marine and Freshwater Behaviour and Physiology, 2014
To examine how aggregation by hairworms may enhance survival in freshwater, we determined water balance characteristics of Paragordius varius in groups of different sizes. P. varius is hyperosmotic resulting in high body water content and functions down to one-half of water stores.
