Mechanochemical Degradation and Fluoride Recovery of Perfluorosulfonic Acid Polymer Membrane

The products were characterized by various techniques including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy−energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy and liquid chromatography−mass spectrometry.

ChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 12, 26 June 2026.A solvent‐free mechanochemical process to upcycle PVDF waste into sodium aluminium fluorides, which are essential for aluminium production, was developed. By ball milling PVDF with AlCl3 and NaCl, the polymer degrades into chiolite and graphitic materials. Subsequent calcination then yields cryolite.
