An African bat in Europe, Plecotus gaisleri: Biogeographic and ecological insights from molecular taxonomy and Species Distribution Models

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 10, Issue 12, Page 5785-5800, June 2020., 2020
Here, we combine Species Distribution Models, field surveys, and molecular analyses to shed light on the long‐debated presence of a cryptic long‐eared bat species from North Africa, Plecotus gaisleri, on the islands of the Sicily Channel, providing strong evidence that this species also occurs in Europe, at least on the islands of Western Mediterranean

Population Structure of the Freshwater Crab Potamon algeriense (Bott, 1967) Inhabiting Oued Zegzel, (Northeast of Morocco)

open access: yesInternational Journal of Ecology, Volume 2019, Issue 1, 2019., 2019
This is the first study to determine the population structure of the freshwater crab Potamon algeriense in Oued Zegzel, a mountain stream in the northeast of Morocco. Monthly collections were carried out by hand, from October 2017 to September 2018. A total of 669 individuals, 378 males and 291 females, were captured, measured, marked, and released ...

Evaluation of a paper by Guarnaccia et al. (2017) on the first report of Phyllosticta citricarpa in Europe

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 16, Issue 1, January 2018., 2018
Abstract The Plant Health Panel reviewed the paper by Guarnaccia et al. () and compared their findings with previous predictions on the establishment of Phyllosticta citricarpa. Four species of Phyllosticta were found by Guarnaccia et al. () in Europe. P. citricarpa and P. capitalensis are well‐defined species, with P. citricarpa recorded for the first

Across the Channel and Through Time: Did Lesser Horseshoe Bats Colonise Pantelleria From Europe or North Africa?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 10, October 2025.
We investigated the biogeographic origin of the lesser horseshoe bat (Rhinolophus hipposideros) on Pantelleria Island, a key Mediterranean crossroads. Using mitochondrial DNA, divergence dating and palaeogeographical reconstruction, we found that Pantelleria bats share a recent evolutionary history with Malta and North African lineages, distinct from ...
