Grade repetition requires students with poor performance to repeat the same grade for an additional year. Despite it being commonly used, little attention has been paid to its link with inequality of educational opportunities. Based on a new large longitudinal dataset of a cohort of secondary students in Italian high schools, the present paper ...

We present robust protocols for the preparation of supported lipid bilayers (SLBs) incorporating either Salmonella smooth LPS or outer membrane vesicles (OMVs). We use a combination of quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM‐D) and fluorescence microscopy to both characterize the SLBs of various compositions and to probe their interactions ...

CONTROVERCY OVER GRADE REPETITION : Afghan Teachers’ View on Grade Repetition
Since 75 years research results has failed to change the practice of repetition among the educational community. Research has found grade repetition ineffective and inefficient in terms of academic and socio-emotional development of students. Furthermore repeaters tend to drop out from school earlier and may end up with behavior problems and low self ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Learning through repetition? A dynamic evaluation of grade retention in Portugal
High rates of grade retention are a matter of much controversy and debate worldwide. Although some students may learn more with extended classroom time, other students get discouraged and drop out of school. This paper develops and implements a dynamic value-added modeling approach for estimating grade retention effects in Portuguese high schools where

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.
