Tapered Graded Index Fibers for Sensing Applications

Workshop on Specialty Optical Fibers and their Applications, 2013
Optical sensors based on modal interference are improved by tapering a small extension of a graded-index fiber. The tapered section modulates the periodic amplitude of the propagated beam, substantially increasing the sensitivity of these devices.

Guided modes in graded index optical fibers

Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1977
A new approach to optical propagation in graded index fibers, based on local tracking of evanescent waves, is developed. The theory furnishes the high-frequency asymptotic expansion of the modal field and yields explicit tractable expressions for the expansion coefficients.

Modified graded-index fibers for chemical sensing

SPIE Proceedings, 1999
Multimode optical fibers with inverted parabolic refractive- index profiles (IGI fibers) have been shown promising for the fabrication of sensing modules for evanescent-wave chemical detection. Besides IGI fibers with parabolic index profiles, this paper deals with theoretical and experimental investigation of some other types of IGI fibers ...

Vectorial wave analysis of graded‐index fibers

Radio Science, 1982
A vector wave analysis is proposed for analyzing the propagation characteristics of the guided modes of the graded‐index fibers. Two pairs of the vector wave equations with respect to the transverse components of the electromagnetic fields are derived and solved by the perturbation method in which we use the scalar wave equation as an unperturbed one ...

Phase integral solutions for graded-index fibers

Journal of the Optical Society of America A, 1985
For the dispersion-optimized range of power-law refractive-index profiles in optical fibers, the phase and the eigenvalue integrals appearing in Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin solutions are solved. These new solutions provide an explicit description of the electromagnetic-field distributions and phase constants in weakly guiding fibers with power-law ...

Graded index plastic optical fibers: quo vadis?

1998 Proceedings. 48th Electronic Components and Technology Conference (Cat. No.98CH36206), 2002
During last ten years there has been a growing interest in the development of graded index plastic optical fibers (GIPOFs) which have potential to provide an alternative solution for various data-link applications such as local area networks and optical sensors. Some practical and theoretical aspects of GIPOFs technology are considered in this paper in

Minimum Impulse Response in Graded-Index Fibers

Bell System Technical Journal, 1977
A straightforward analysis slightly extending the work of Kawakami and Nishizawa and of Gloge and Marcatili provides some insight about the extent to which the mode differential delay in a graded-index fiber can be minimized. We show that an ideal fiber (no mode mixing) with uniform mode excitation and loss and uniform material dispersion can ...

Propagating Fields in Graded Index Optical Fibers

1979
Solution of the wave equation for light propagation in an optical fiber yields detailed information on power losses, angular and spatial sizes of transmitted light and modal propagation constants.

High Performance Graded Index Polymer Optical Fibers

1998
Abstract : Experimental and theoretical studies of the optical properties of large core step index (SI) plastic optical fibers (POF) and graded index (GI) POFs are reported. A set of criteria and analyses of physical parameters are developed in context to the major issues of POF applications in short-distance communication systems.
