An energy residual-based approach to gradient effects within the mechanics of generalized continua

open access: yesJournal of the Mechanical Behavior of Materials, 2012
Generalized continua exhibiting gradient effects are addressed through a method grounded on the energy residual (ER)-based gradient theory by the first author and coworkers.

Optimization of ceramic strength using elastic gradients [PDF]

open access: yesActa Materialia, 2009
We present a new concept for strengthening ceamics by utilizing a graded structure with a low elastic modulus at both top and bottom surfaces sandwiching a high-modulus interior. Closed-form equations have been developed for stress analysis of simply supported graded sandwich beams subject to transverse center loads.

New applications of a generalized Hooke’s law for second gradient materials

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics Letters, 2015
We provide analytical solutions to the problems of a circular bending of a beam in plane strain and the torsion of a non-circular cross-section beam, the beams obeying a second-gradient elasticity law proposed by the author, following a previous ...

Non-singular dislocation loops in gradient elasticity

open access: yes, 2012
Using gradient elasticity, we give in this Letter the non-singular fields produced by arbitrary dislocation loops in isotropic media. We present the `modified' Mura, Peach-Koehler and Burgers formulae in the framework of gradient elasticity theory ...

Gedanken experiments for the determination of two-dimensional linear second gradient elasticity coefficients [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
In the present paper, a two-dimensional solid consisting of a linear elastic isotropic material, for which the deformation energy depends on the second gradient of the displacement, is considered.

Dipolar gradient elasticity of cables

open access: yesInternational Journal of Solids and Structures, 2012
AbstractThe increasing structural use of cables and cable-systems has given rise to a substantial technical literature concerning their static and dynamic response. However, the majority of these works is based on classical elasticity theory, according to which the rigidity of the cable is neglected.

Higher-order gradient elasticity models applied to geometrically nonlinear discrete systems [PDF]

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Mechanics, 2015
The buckling and post-buckling behavior of a nonlinear discrete repetitive system, the discrete elastica, is studied herein. The nonlinearity essentially comes from the geometrical effect, whereas the constitutive law of each component is ...

Gradient Schemes for Linear and Non-linear Elasticity Equations

open access: yes, 2014
The Gradient Scheme framework provides a unified analysis setting for many different families of numerical methods for diffusion equations. We show in this paper that the Gradient Scheme framework can be adapted to elasticity equations, and provides ...

Non-local dispersion and ultrasonic tunneling in concentrationally graded solids

open access: yesModern Electronic Materials, 2017
The non-local dispersion of longitudinal ultrasonic waves is shown to appear in the heterogeneous solids due to continuous spatial distributions of their density and/or elasticity (gradient solids).

Early‐life high‐fat diet exposure increases Achilles tendon stiffness and induces transcriptomic alterations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Early‐life exposure to a high‐fat diet altered intact Achilles tendons in rat offspring, making them thinner, stiffer, and molecularly distinct even without injury. These findings suggest that developmental high‐fat diet exposure may impair tendon quality and increase susceptibility to mechanical overload or tendon injury later in life.
