Local investigation of grain boundaries by grain-boundary EBIC

Physica Status Solidi (a), 1993
Grain-boundary (GB) EBIC is an alternative EBIC geometry without a Schottky contact or p–n junction but with ohmic contacts on either side of a GB which itself acts as a charge collecting plane. The basic properties of the GB EBIC signal in the short-circuit mode and with application of an external bias are presented.

Grain Boundary Network: Grain Boundary Texture

2012
If we try to understand the role of grain boundary networks in polycrystal properties, in order to promote special behaviours of the material, the first task is to establish then to control the grain boundary organization in that network. This is the objective of numerous studies dealing with the determination of the grain boundary characteristic ...

Impact of grain boundary character on grain boundary kinetics

Zeitschrift für Metallkunde, 2003
Abstract The current research on grain boundary dynamics in metals is reviewed. The boundary dynamics, i. e., the boundary reaction to applied forces, is strongly dependent on the grain boundary character, which is commonly reduced to the orientation relationship between adjacent grains and impurity segregation at the boundary.

Viscous grain-boundary sliding and grain rotation accommodated by grain-boundary diffusion

Acta Materialia, 2005
When the sliding of a viscous grain boundary is accommodated by grain-boundary diffusion, we evaluate the sliding rate and the stress distribution on the boundary, by employing the energy-balance method developed by Mori et al. [Mori T, Nakasone Y, Taya M, Wakashima K. Phil Mag Lett 1997;75:359 and Mori T, Koda M, Monzen R, Mura T.

Grain Boundary Grooving as an Indicator of Grain Boundary Phase Transformations

Interface Science, 2001
The atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to study the grain boundary (GB) groove profiles far away from the melting temperature T m. It is shown that AFM allows one to measure the temperature dependence of the GB energy in a rather broad temperature interval (from 0.85 T m to T m). The GB energy and GB segregation of Bi were measured at 1123 K in the

Instability of grain boundary grooves due to equilibrium grain boundary diffusion

Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1991
Abstract All previous theoretical investigations on grain boundary grooving are based on the assumption, that the grain boundary does not participate in the material transport. In the present paper it is shown theoretically and experimentally for the first time, that by removing this restriction one obtains completely different groove profiles in ...

The role of partial grain boundary dislocations in grain boundary sliding and coupled grain boundary motion

Journal of Materials Science, 2006
We study the process of grain boundary sliding through the motion of grain boundary dislocations, utilizing molecular dynamics and embedded atom method (EAM) interatomic potentials. For a Σ = 5 [001]{310} symmetrical tilt boundary in bcc Fe, the sliding process was found to occur through the nucleation and glide of partial grain boundary dislocations ...

Boundary conditions at grain boundaries

Journal of Applied Physics, 1983
Grain boundaries in polycrystalline semiconductor material are frequently idealized as surfaces possessing a characteristic surface recombination velocity. Minority carrier densities generated by external sources (electron beams, light, etc.) in polycrystalline p–n junctions must satisfy certain boundary conditions at these grain boundaries which will ...

Grains, grain boundaries and interfaces

2004
The topic of grains and grain houndaries is extremely vast and covers many different concepts, involving not only the associated microstructural features, hut also the effects on material characteristics such as corrosion resistance and mechanical properties.

Grain Boundary Structure and Diffusion Induced Grain Boundary Migration

MRS Proceedings, 1991
AbstractWe present a review of systematic studies of diffusion induced grain boundary migration (DIGM). The results are compared with structural models for the grain boundaries in order to assess the effects of structure upon DIGM. The nucleation of DIGM is also assessed in the light of grain boundary structure and it is demonstrated that changes of ...
