Impact of grain boundary character on grain boundary kinetics
Zeitschrift für Metallkunde, 2003Abstract The current research on grain boundary dynamics in metals is reviewed. The boundary dynamics, i. e., the boundary reaction to applied forces, is strongly dependent on the grain boundary character, which is commonly reduced to the orientation relationship between adjacent grains and impurity segregation at the boundary.

Dislocations in grain boundaries and grain boundary sliding
Acta Metallurgica, 1967Abstract The Burgers vectors of grain boundary dislocations were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy in creep tested iron and iron alloys. The analysis indicates that the dislocations retain their original Burgers vectors when joining grain boundaries and remain undissociated. It is suggested that grain boundary sliding in creep is caused by

Local investigation of grain boundaries by grain-boundary EBIC
Physica Status Solidi (a), 1993Grain-boundary (GB) EBIC is an alternative EBIC geometry without a Schottky contact or p–n junction but with ohmic contacts on either side of a GB which itself acts as a charge collecting plane. The basic properties of the GB EBIC signal in the short-circuit mode and with application of an external bias are presented.

Grain boundary segregation produced by grain boundary movement
Scripta Metallurgica, 1983Experimental evidence of grain boundary enrichment is given in a temperature region where the bulk diffusion is negligible. The phenomenon can be explained by supposing that the grain boundaries gather the dissolved atoms while passing through the grains.

Journal of Materials Science, 2006
We study the process of grain boundary sliding through the motion of grain boundary dislocations, utilizing molecular dynamics and embedded atom method (EAM) interatomic potentials. For a Σ = 5 [001]{310} symmetrical tilt boundary in bcc Fe, the sliding process was found to occur through the nucleation and glide of partial grain boundary dislocations ...

Grain Boundary Segregation. Grain Boundary Diffusion
1985In polycrystalline materials, grain boundaries differ from the monocrystalline bulk by : i) their structure, ii) their electronic properties, iii) their chemical composition, iv) the atomic mobility of all the species.

The role of grain boundary dislocations in grain boundary sliding
Acta Metallurgica, 1973Abstract Dislocation models for grain boundary sliding have generally invoked lattice dislocations moving along the boundary as the basic mode of deformation. This paper considers the possibility of structural dislocations accounting for the same phenomenon.

Novel Approaches to the Thermodynamis of Grain Boundaries and Grain Boundary Junctions
Materials Science Forum, 2007Three recent investigations in the field of thermodynamics of grain boundaries and grain boundary junctions are presented. 1. The grain boundary excess free volume (BFV) along with the surface tension belongs to the major thermodynamic properties of grain boundaries.

Grain Boundary Network: Grain Boundary Texture
2012If we try to understand the role of grain boundary networks in polycrystal properties, in order to promote special behaviours of the material, the first task is to establish then to control the grain boundary organization in that network. This is the objective of numerous studies dealing with the determination of the grain boundary characteristic ...

On the chemistry of grain boundary segregation and grain boundary fracture
Metallurgical Transactions A, 1990This paper considers the problem of impurity segregation in metals and the effect of these impurities on grain boundary cohesion. The primary goal of this paper is to provide a physical model that will allow us to think about these two processes. We describe both of them in chemical terms.
