Impact of grain boundary energy anisotropy on grain growth [PDF]
A threshold dynamics model of grain growth that accounts for the anisotropy in the grain boundary energy has been used to simulate experimentally observed grain growth of polycrystalline Ni. The simulation reproduces several aspects of the observed microstructural evolution that are not found in the results of simulations assuming isotropic properties.

Phase Pattern Formation in Grain Boundaries [PDF]
In this work we derive conditions that predict the existence of two-phase periodic-pattern grain boundary structures that are stable against coarsening. While previous research has established that elastic effects can lead to phase pattern formation on crystal surfaces, the possibility of stable grain boundary structures composed of alternating grain ...

Grain boundary relaxation and reconstruction: effect on local magnetic moment [PDF]
We present a detailed numerical study on structure and local magnetic properties of $\langle 100 \rangle$ symmetric tilt grain boundaries in bcc-iron. Particular attention is paid to connection between type of grain boundary relaxation and local magnetic properties.

Stabilization and self-passivation of symmetrical grain boundaries by mirror symmetry breaking [PDF]
While computational methods for the study of point defects in materials have received significant attention, methods for the investigation of grain boundaries require further development. In this study, we applied a genetic algorithm to find the atomic structure of grain boundaries in semiconductor materials with given Miller indices and investigated ...

New phase-field model for polycrystalline systems with anisotropic grain boundary properties
In this paper, a new methodology is presented to inlude anisotropic grain boundary properties in a phase-field model. The new approach is thermodynamically consistent and gives accurate control of the inclination and misorientation of grain boundary ...

Entropy-Driven Grain Boundary Segregation: Prediction of the Phenomenon
The question is formulated as to whether entropy-driven grain boundary segregation can exist. Such a phenomenon would be based on the assumption that a solute can segregate at the grain boundary sites that exhibit positive segregation energy (enthalpy ...

Grain boundary energies and cohesive strength as a function of geometry [PDF]
Cohesive laws are stress-strain curves used in finite element calculations to describe the debonding of interfaces such as grain boundaries. It would be convenient to describe grain boundary cohesive laws as a function of the parameters needed to describe the grain boundary geometry; two parameters in 2D and 5 parameters in 3D.

Charge and spin transport on graphene grain boundaries in a quantizing magnetic field [PDF]
We study charge and spin transport along grain boundaries in single layer graphene in the presence of a quantizing magnetic field. Transport states in a grain boundary are produced by hybridization of Landau zero modes with interfacial states. In selected energy regimes quantum Hall edge states can be deflected either fully or partially into grain ...

We investigated the effects of grain boundary phases on magnetization reversal in permanent magnets by performing large-scale micromagnetic simulations based on Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert equation under a periodic boundary.
