Endocarditis due to anaerobic gram-negative bacilli

The American Journal of Medicine, 1973
Abstract A case of Bacteroides fragilis endocarditis which developed after appendicitis is discussed. Combined therapy with tetracycline and erythromycin for over 18 months, and therapy with several other agents given over a period of more than two years in all, failed to eradicate the infection.

Anaerobic Gram-Negative Bacilli

2016
The anaerobic Gram-negative bacteria are part of the microbiota of the oral cavity, gastrointestinal tract, and urogenital tract ( 1 , 2 , 3 ). Many taxonomic changes have been instituted based on newer biochemical and molecular sequencing considerations.

Resistance of Gram-Negative Bacilli to Antimicrobials

2007
Bacterial pathogens exist in extremely large numbers, and their growth rates are generally rapid. This results in relentless evolution toward drug resistance under the selective pressure applied by the use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture.

The Effect of Nitrofurantoin on the Morphology of Gram-Negative Bacilli

Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1972
Nitrofurantoin has been reported to inhibit numerous enzymes [1, 2], but there is some question about which, if any, of these represents its primary mode of action. It also interferes with the synthesis of cell walls in Staphylococcus aureus [3]. It is the purpose of this note to report effects of nitrofurantoin on the morphology of some gramnegative ...

Pneumonia Caused by Gram-Negative Bacilli: An Overview

Clinical Infectious Diseases, 1985
Colonization of the oropharynx by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and enteric gram-negative bacilli in acutely ill or debilitated patients, alcoholics, diabetics, and persons with chronic bronchitis may lead to pneumonia. Although gram staining of sputum may provide immediate etiologic clues, the diagnosis is proven only by isolation of the pathogen from blood ...

Azthreonam Activity against Gram-Negative Bacilli

Chemotherapy, 1984
The in vitro activity of azthreonam - a monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic - was compared with the activities of ampicillin, cephalothin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, cefoperazone, lamoxactam, ceftazidime, and N-formimidoyl thienamycin against 249 clinical isolates of gram-negative bacilli.

The Mode of Action of Antibiotics on Gram-Negative Bacilli

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1971
The mode of action of any antibiotic is essentially the same, whether it is against gram-positive or gram-negative microorganisms. 1,2 In order to present a schematic version of the modes of action, I will try to give just enough molecular and biochemical information to facilitate understanding without burdening the reader with unnecessary details ...
