Meningitis Caused by Gram-Negative Bacilli

Thirty adults with meningitis caused by gram-negative bacilli were observed from 1968 to 1978 at four hospitals associated with Boston University School of Medicine. Equal numbers of two distinct types of gram-negative bacillary meningitis--spontaneously occurring meningitis and meningitis after neurosurgery--were found.

[Gram negative bacilli endocarditis ].

Gram negative bacilli endocarditis are unfrequent. Nevertheless we encountered 28 cases of them (8.8%) among 320 endocarditis of which 10 were primitive and 7 cases (10.9%) among 65 prosthetic endocarditis. Bacterial species were 12 Pseudomonas aeruginosa, 2 Ps, stutzeri, 1 Ps.

Azthreonam Activity against Gram-Negative Bacilli

The in vitro activity of azthreonam - a monocyclic beta-lactam antibiotic - was compared with the activities of ampicillin, cephalothin, cefuroxime, cefotaxime, cefoperazone, lamoxactam, ceftazidime, and N-formimidoyl thienamycin against 249 clinical isolates of gram-negative bacilli.
