Gram-positive peritonitis in children
The American Journal of Surgery, 1973Abstract One hundred ninety-one patients with gram-positive (primary) peritonitis are described. The evolution of the disease before and after the widespread use of antibiotics (taken as 1950) is discussed. Pneumococcus has been the most common organism cultured.

Management of Gram-positive bacteraemia
Current Opinion in Infectious Diseases, 2007Gram-positive bacteraemic infections are frequent and associated with high morbidity and mortality. This paper reviews publications focusing exclusively on new findings related to Gram-positive bacteraemia in the published literature from July 2006 to June 2007.Ninety-eight articles have been reviewed.

Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacterial extracellular vesicles
Seminars in Cell & Developmental Biology, 2015Like mammalian cells, Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria release nano-sized membrane vesicles into the extracellular environment either in a constitutive manner or in a regulated manner. These bacterial extracellular vesicles are spherical bilayered proteolipids enriched with bioactive proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and virulence factors ...

Antagonism by a Gram-positive coccus
Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 1970A Sarcina sp. has been isolated which is antagonistic to the growth of a number of Gram-positive bacteria when grown on solid media. The morphological and biochemical characteristics of the organism are described. The biological properties of the inhibitor have been examined. The data suggest that the inhibitor may interfere with cell wall synthesis.

Miscellaneous gram-positive organisms
2008The pediococci are gram-positive bacteria that grow in pairs and tetrads and belong to the lactic acid bacteria group. They are used extensively in industry to ferment cheese and other dairy products, soy products, and alcoholic beverages, and they are normal inhabitants of the human gastrointestinal tract.

Differing outcomes of gram-positive and gram-negative peritonitis
American Journal of Kidney Diseases, 1998Peritonitis remains the leading cause of patient dropout from continuous peritoneal dialysis (CPD) therapy. Few studies have compared patient morbidity, mortality, and outcome for patients undergoing CPD who develop gram-positive and gram-negative peritonitis. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of patients who developed either gram-positive or gram-

Impermeability to quinolones in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria
European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 1991The initial step in the accumulation of fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agents is binding to cell surface components reduced by lowered pH and divalent cations. Uptake into gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria is by simple diffusion. Entry through the outer membrane occurs preferentially for most agents by the porin route but a second process using ...

Resistant gram-positive organisms
Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1994Antimicrobial resistance in Gram-positive bacteria has reemerged in the last decade as a major clinical problem. Methicillin-resistant staphylococci, penicillin-resistant pneumococci, and enterococci resistant to penicillin, vancomycin, and/or gentamicin have become new considerations in the selection of therapy.

â–¼Linezolid for Gram-positive infections
Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, 2001▼Linezolid* (Zyvox - Pharmacia) - the first oxazolidinone antibacterial - is marketed in the UK for treating hospital- and community-acquired pneumonia, skin and soft tissue infections. The manufacturer claims that switching from i.v. to oral administration of linezolid needs no dose adjustment and "will lead to early patient discharge and ...

Gram-positive Organisms and Sepsis
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1994In recent years, the importance of gram-negative organisms in the genesis of sepsis has been emphasized. However, this emphasis may no longer be correct; recent studies show an increasing incidence of gram-positive sources of sepsis, and its is possible that these cases may predominate in the coming years.
