m-Linear Context-Free Rewriting Systems as Abstract Categorial Grammars

open access: yes, 2003
This paper presents a coding of m-linear context-free rewriting systems (m-LCFRS) into abstract categorial grammars (ACG). Thus, it shows the latter formalism, which offers a powerful grammatical framework based on a small set of computational primitives, is able to reach some interesting classes of languages w.r.t. natural language modeling.

Establishing a Model for Serious Science Game Design for Elementary Learners: A Longitudinal, Mixed Methods Study of Serious Game Design Mechanics That Facilitate Science Learning

open access: yesScience Education, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Immersive learning environments, such as serious educational games (SEGs), offer promising opportunities for enhancing elementary students' science learning outcomes and fostering their interest in science. These environments allow learners to explore scientific phenomena in ways traditional instruction cannot replicate.

Higher-order port-graph rewriting

open access: yes, 2012
The biologically inspired framework of port-graphs has been successfully used to specify complex systems. It is the basis of the PORGY modelling tool. To facilitate the specification of proof normalisation procedures via graph rewriting, in this paper we

Robust Material Properties in Epitaxial In2Te3 Thin Films across Varying Thicknesses

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Epitaxial In2Te3 thin films grown on Si(111) substrates display remarkably robust structural, optical, and vibrational properties across a broad range of thicknesses. Unlike metavalent chalcogenides (Sb2Te3 or GeTe), these covalently bonded films maintain their intrinsic characteristics even at the nanometer scale.

Re‐Indexing Epistemic Responsibility: A Grammatical Analysis of How a Teacher Made Space for Students' Epistemic Agency

open access: yesJournal of Research in Science Teaching, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Supporting students' epistemic agency is a key goal of science education. However, the process of realizing this goal in classrooms is complex and layered, and we have a limited understanding of how teachers draw from their practice to position students as epistemic agents, making it difficult to provide concrete actionable guidance for ...

Neutral Forms of Be as Default Forms: The Utility of Underspecification and Blocking in a Welsh Morphosyntactic Phenomenon

open access: yesTransactions of the Philological Society, EarlyView.
Abstract In Welsh, in certain tenses, unique forms of the verb for ‘be’ are used in positive clauses. These specialised forms of ‘be’ are incompatible with positive main‐clause declarative complementizers, despite their apparent featural compatibility. For most speakers, they are also blocked from if‐clauses; although, I report on data regarding their ...
