Grammaticalisation as paradigmatisation
2015By arguing that grammaticalisation inevitably involves paradigmatisation, i.e. formation of new paradigms or reformation of existing paradigms, we challenge leading approaches to grammaticalisation that consider the stages on the so-called cline of grammaticality the prototypical path of grammaticalisation.

In this paper we deal with Old English and Old High German copula constructions combining verbs denoting ‘be’ and ‘become’ with past participles, which are traditionally analysed as periphrastic passive constructions. We propose that these constructions cannot be seen as grammaticalised passives but rather as fully compositional structures.

The article describes the different outcomes of this process by distinguishing different patterns resulting from the interpretation of the numeral as a quantifier, a classifier or both.

2012The purpose of this paper is to outline the diachronic development of English adverbial connectives, mainly subordinators and prepositions, from Old to Present-day English. In Old English, the use of the subordination markers þe and þæt forming part of the adverbial subordinator and the gradual increase of þe is of interest.
