Grammaticalisation as paradigmatisation
2015By arguing that grammaticalisation inevitably involves paradigmatisation, i.e. formation of new paradigms or reformation of existing paradigms, we challenge leading approaches to grammaticalisation that consider the stages on the so-called cline of grammaticality the prototypical path of grammaticalisation.

In this paper we deal with Old English and Old High German copula constructions combining verbs denoting ‘be’ and ‘become’ with past participles, which are traditionally analysed as periphrastic passive constructions. We propose that these constructions cannot be seen as grammaticalised passives but rather as fully compositional structures.

The pragmatics of grammaticalisation
Journal of Historical Pragmatics, 2010This paper aims to identify the role of pragmatics in grammaticalisation and to highlight the particular steps in the process of the conventionalisation of conversational implicatures on the basis of a historical pragmatic study concerning the grammaticalisation of the Catalan anar ‘to go’ + infinitive construction.

Replica grammaticalisation as recapitulation
Diachronica, 2014The study of replica grammaticalisation in contact (Heine & Kuteva 2003, 2005) has not been without its critics (e.g. Matthews & Yip 2009, Gast & van der Auwera 2012) because of assumptions of a historical linguistic awareness of model language grammaticalisation routes.

Grammaticalisation and the internal logic of the indefinite article
Folia Linguistica, 2012The West-European languages all develop an indefinite article by a grammaticalisation process of the numeral 'one'. The article describes the different outcomes of this process by distinguishing different patterns resulting from the interpretation of the numeral as a quantifier, a classifier or both.

Grammaticalisation through constructions
Annual Review of Cognitive Linguistics, 2004Recent arguments by Langacker (2003) on the nature of verb meanings in constructions claim that such meanings are created by entrenchment and frequency of use, and only with repeated use can they become conventionalised and acceptable. Such a position raises the need for a diachronic perspective on Construction Grammar.

Grammaticalisation, contact and corpora
2012The purpose of this paper is to outline the diachronic development of English adverbial connectives, mainly subordinators and prepositions, from Old to Present-day English. In Old English, the use of the subordination markers þe and þæt forming part of the adverbial subordinator and the gradual increase of þe is of interest.
