Gas and stellar spiral arms and their offsets in the grand-design spiral galaxy M51 [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
Theoretical studies on the response of interstellar gas to a gravitational potential disc with a quasi-stationary spiral arm pattern suggest that the gas experiences a sudden compression due to standing shock waves at spiral arms. This mechanism, called a galactic shock wave, predicts that gas spiral arms move from downstream to upstream of stellar ...

Synthetic HI observations of a simulated spiral galaxy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Using the Torus radiative transfer code we produce synthetic observations of the 21 cm neutral hydrogen line from an SPH simulation of a spiral galaxy. The SPH representation of the galaxy is mapped onto an AMR grid, and a ray tracing method is used to ...

Evidence for small halos in grand design spiral galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1990

Simulations of Normal Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
Results are presented of numerical simulations of normal isolated late type spiral galaxies. Specifically the galaxy NGC 628 is used as a template. The method employs a TREESPH code including stellar particles, gas particles, cooling and heating of the ...

A panchromatic spatially resolved analysis of nearby galaxies – I. Sub-kpc-scale main sequence in grand-design spirals [PDF]

open access: yesMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
ABSTRACT We analyse the spatially resolved relation between stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR) in disc galaxies (i.e. the main sequence, MS). The studied sample includes eight nearby face-on grand-design spirals, e.g. the descendant of high-redshift, rotationally supported star-forming galaxies.

A high resolution CO map of the inner region of M51 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
M51, the Whirlpool Galaxy, at a distance of ≈ 9,6 Mpc and a systemic velocity of 465 km s^(−1), is the closest “Grand Design” spiral galaxy. Its low inclination (20°) makes it an excellent target for structural studies, e.g.

Flocculent and grand design spiral galaxies in groups - Time scales for the persistence of grand design spiral structures

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 1983
Spiral arm classifications were made for 261 low-inclination galaxies in groups listed by Huchra and Geller. The fractional occurrence of grand design spiral structure in nonbarred galaxies was found to increase from approx.0.1 to approx.0.6 and then level off as the group crossing rate or galaxy collision rate in a group increases.
