High-resolution, 3D radiative transfer modeling : I. The grand-design spiral galaxy M51 [PDF]

open access: greenAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2014
Context. Dust reprocesses about half of the stellar radiation in galaxies. The thermal re-emission by dust of absorbed energy is considered to be driven merely by young stars so is often applied to tracing the star formation rate in galaxies.

Gas and stellar spiral arms and their offsets in the grand-design spiral galaxy M51 [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2016
Theoretical studies on the response of interstellar gas to a gravitational potential disc with a quasi-stationary spiral arm pattern suggest that the gas experiences a sudden compression due to standing shock waves at spiral arms.

Star formation in grand-design, spiral galaxies [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2012
Deep, near-infrared JHK-maps were observed for 10 nearby, grand-design, spiral galaxies using HAWK-I/VLT to study the distribution of young stellar clusters in them and thereby determine whether strong spiral perturbations can influence star formation ...

The sequence of spiral arm classes: Observational signatures of persistent spiral density waves in grand-design galaxies [PDF]

open access: greenProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2019
We investigate how the properties of spiral arms relate to other fundamental galaxy properties. To this end, we use previously published measurements of those properties, and our own measurements of arm-interarm luminosity contrasts for a large sample of

A panchromatic spatially resolved analysis of nearby galaxies – I. Sub-kpc-scale main sequence in grand-design spirals [PDF]

open access: bronzeMonthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, 2020
We analyse the spatially resolved relation between stellar mass (M⋆) and star formation rate (SFR) in disc galaxies (i.e. the main sequence, MS). The studied sample includes eight nearby face-on grand-design spirals, e.g.

Spatially resolved properties of the grand-design spiral galaxy UGC 9837: a case for high-redshift 2-D observations [PDF]

open access: bronzeAstronomy & Astrophysics, 2011
Context. We carry out a detailed 2-D study of the ionised gas in the local universe galaxy UGC 9837. In nearby galaxies, like the galaxy in question here, the spatial distribution of the physical properties can be studied in detail, providing benchmarks ...

A New Statistical Analysis of the Morphology of Spiral Galaxies [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Morphology is the starting point for understanding galaxies. Elmegreen et al. classified spiral galaxies into flocculent, multiple-arm, and grand-design galaxies based on the regularity of their spiral arm structure.

Flocculent and grand design spiral galaxies in groups - Time scales for the persistence of grand design spiral structures

open access: closedThe Astrophysical Journal, 1983
Spiral arm classifications were made for 261 low-inclination galaxies in groups listed by Huchra and Geller. The fractional occurrence of grand design spiral structure in nonbarred galaxies was found to increase from approx.0.1 to approx.0.6 and then level off as the group crossing rate or galaxy collision rate in a group increases.

Metallicity Gradient of a Lensed Face-on Spiral Galaxy at Redshift 1.49 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We present the first metallicity gradient measurement for a grand-design face-on spiral galaxy at z~1.5. This galaxy has been magnified by a factor of 22$\times$ by a massive, X-ray luminous galaxy cluster MACS\,J1149.5+2223 at z=0.544.
