Morphology and Kinematics of the Gas in M51: How Interaction with NGC 5195 Has Molded the Structure of Its Arms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Whirlpool Galaxy is a well-studied grand design galaxy with two major spiral arms, and a large satellite NGC 5195. The arms both show long uniform sections with perturbations (“kinks” or sharp turns) in specific regions.

Analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates by matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry: An update for 2021–2022

open access: yesMass Spectrometry Reviews, EarlyView.
Abstract The use of matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry for the analysis of carbohydrates and glycoconjugates is a well‐established technique and this review is the 12th update of the original article published in 1999 and brings coverage of the literature to the end of 2022.

A nuclear grand-design spiral within the normal disc spiral of NGC 5248 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
We report the discovery of trailing grand-design nuclear spiral structure in the spiral galaxy NGC 5248. Two tightly-wound red spiral arms, with widths less than 1 arcsec (~75 pc), emanate at 1 arcsec outside the quiescent nucleus of the galaxy, and can be followed for 3 arcsec, appearing to end before the radius of the circumnuclear starburst "ring ...

Analyzing the cosmic web environment in the vicinity of grand-design and flocculent spirals with local geometric index [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We explore the environment of a combined set of $367$ grand-design and $619$ flocculent spiral galaxies. We introduce a novel estimator called the \textit{local geometric index} to quantify the morphology of the local environment of these $986$ spirals.

The Coherent Magnetic Field of the Milky Way

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
We present a suite of models of the coherent magnetic field of the Galaxy based on new divergence-free parametric functions describing the global structure of the field.

Dynamically Driven Evolution of the Interstellar Medium in M51 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Massive star formation occurs in giant molecular clouds (GMCs); an understanding of the evolution of GMCs is a prerequisite to develop theories of star formation and galaxy evolution. We report the highest-fidelity observations of the grand-design spiral

Rethinking the relation between human and nature: Insights from science fiction

open access: yesBusiness and Society Review, EarlyView.
Abstract Facing the accumulation of data that suggest near‐future dramatic changes in our way of life, current visions of transition are anchored in an incremental paradigm that excludes radical change. Using science fiction literature and cinema, this article aims to build such drastic change hypotheses and explore the political–ecological features of

‘The non‐dormant beast’: Antisemitism in communities of Russian nationalists on Vkontakte

open access: yesNations and Nationalism, EarlyView.
Abstract The article explores the specifics of Russian antisemitic discourse of recent years using the example of three nationalist communities on Vkontakte, the most popular Russian social networking site, by means of critical discourse analysis. The main strategies they employ to frame the Jews online are stereotyping Jews as ungrateful and greedy ...

The Visibility of Galactic Bars and Spiral Structure At High Redshifts [PDF]

open access: yes, 2002
We investigate the visibility of galactic bars and spiral structure in the distant Universe by artificially redshifting 101 B-band CCD images of local spiral galaxies from the Ohio State University Bright Spiral Galaxy Survey. Our artificially redshifted

Dual and spatially resolved drought responses in the Arabidopsis leaf mesophyll revealed by single‐cell transcriptomics

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Drought stress imposes severe challenges on agriculture by impacting crop performance. Understanding drought responses in plants at a cellular level is a crucial first step toward engineering improved drought resilience. However, the molecular responses to drought are complex as they depend on multiple factors, including the severity of drought,
