A direct test of density wave theory in a grand-design spiral galaxy

open access: yes, 2019
The exact nature of the arms of spiral galaxies is still an open question1. It has been widely assumed that spiral arms in galaxies with two distinct symmetrical arms are the products of density waves that propagate around the disk, with the spiral arms being visibly enhanced by the star formation that is triggered as the passing wave compresses gas in

Synergies in Self‐Assembly—From Supramolecular Polymers to Defined Hierarchical Superstructures

open access: yesJournal of Polymer Science, Volume 63, Issue 21, Page 4450-4465, 1 November 2025.
Shaping supramolecular polymers built from molecular building blocks into superstructures with defined dimensions. Synergies within supramolecular architectures such as chirality or an additional second orthogonal driving force that does not interfere with the central supramolecular motif facilitate the confinement of the growth of these ...

Soft band X/K luminosity ratios in late-type galaxies and constraints on the population of supersoft X-ray sources

open access: yes, 2010
We study X-ray to K-band luminosity ratios (L_X/L_K) of late-type galaxies in the 0.3-0.7 keV energy range. From the Chandra archive, we selected nine spiral and three irregular galaxies with point source detection sensitivity better than 5 x 10^36 erg/s

Blue and near-infrared surface photometry of spiral structure in 34 nonbarred grand design and flocculent galaxies

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 1984

Porphyromonas gingivalis Type 9 Secretion System Promotes Dysregulation of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Plasticity With Perturbed TGF‐β/Smad Signaling

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 14, Issue 5, October 2025.
An intact type 9 secretion system (T9SS) is required for Porphyromonas gingivalis‐mediated dysregulation of aortic smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation. During infection, T9SS also enhanced phosphorylation of multiple sites on transcription factor Smad3 that is implicated in pathologic cell responses to TGF‐β/Smad signaling.

Density waves and star formation in grand design spirals

open access: yes, 2013
HII regions in the arms of spiral galaxies are indicators of recent star-forming processes. They may have been caused by the passage of the density wave or simply created by other means near the arms.

A grand-design spiral galaxy 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang with JWST

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
We report the discovery of Alaknanda, a large (∼10 kpc diameter), massive (log( M ⋆ / M ⊙ )∼10.2), candidate grand-design spiral galaxy with photometric redshift z phot

Nuclear Spirals as Signatures of Supermassive Black Holes

open access: yes, 2004
Recent high resolution images of spiral galaxies show wide varieties of features including nuclear spirals in the central parts. Some of the galaxies show grand-design nuclear spirals.

ALMA reveals the feeding of the Seyfert 1 nucleus in NGC 1566

open access: yes, 2014
We report ALMA observations of CO(3-2) emission in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 1566, at a spatial resolution of 25 pc. Our aim is to investigate the morphology and dynamics of the gas inside the central kpc, and to probe nuclear fueling and feedback ...
