Geological and geotechnical challenges on the Great Dyke of Zimbabwe and their impact on hardrock pillar design

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The Great Dyke of Zimbabwe is notable for its rich platinum group metal deposits but poses significant geological and geotechnical challenges due to its complex rock types and structural features. Traditional pillar design methods are insufficient for addressing these complexities; the study suggests incorporating advanced techniques such as machine ...

Petrogenesis and Tectonic Implication of Jurassic Granites in Central Guangdong, SE China: Constraints from Zircon U-Pb-Hf-O and Whole-Rock Geochemical and Sr-Nd Isotopic Data [PDF]

open access: yesLithosphere
The origin and tectonic regime responsible for the inland Jurassic granites in Southeast (SE) China remain controversial. This study presents zircon secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) U-Pb ages, in situ zircon Hf-O isotopes, and whole-rock ...

Numerical investigation on the influence of mesoscopic deformation on contact area and hydraulic aperture to fracture seepage

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Fluid flow through a single fracture is commonly described by the cubic law. However, deviations from this model are expected because natural fracture surfaces are rough and in contact with each other in discrete regions. In this study, the interactions between fracture closure, contact area, and hydraulic characterization of mesoscopic‐scale rough ...

The Proterozoic granitoids of Finland: Granite types, metallogeny and relation to crustal evolution [PDF]

open access: yesBulletin of the Geological Society of Finland, 1986
The granitoids are divided into four main groups: synkinematic (1860‒1930 Ma, most commonly 1870‒1890 Ma), late-kinematic (1800‒1850 Ma) and postkinematic (ca. 1800 Ma) Svecokarelian granitoids, and anorogenic rapakivi granites (1540‒1700 Ma).

A review on rockburst prediction and prevention to shape an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making for underground excavations

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A scientometric analysis of 2449 journal articles and a comprehensive review of 336 papers were conducted, discussing and identifying challenges and research gaps in rockburst prediction and prevention and proposing an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making in underground excavations. Abstract With underground engineering projects becoming

Investigation on hard‐rock breaking performance and auxiliary mechanism of picks assisted with both‐sided high‐pressure water jets

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper investigates the high‐pressure water jet‐pick combined rock‐breaking mode (HPC), which employs high‐pressure water jets to precut grooves on both sides of the picks. The rock‐breaking patterns and performance of the HPC method are obtained, and the auxiliary rock‐breaking mechanism of water jet grooving is revealed.

Permeability of granite from a shallow buried mountain pipe gallery tunnel under unloading confining pressure

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Triaxial compression tests under unloading confining pressure conditions were conducted to systematically analyze the permeability behavior of granite retrieved from the different classification surrounding rocks. Abstract The rock mass within mountain tunnels undergoes complex changes in permeability, strength, and deformation during tunneling ...

Epoxy Granite Properties using Indian Origin Granite

open access: yesInternational Journal of Engineering and Advanced Technology, 2020
Precision machine tools are expected to operate at higher machine speed to produce precise products. Hence, its structures must have high structural stiffness and high damping along with dimensional and geometrical stability. Granite is the material used for metrological and precision machine manufacturing applications.

Critical expansion points: Mechanical signs of surrounding rock instability

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study proposes the Rock Bearing‐Expansion Model (RockBEM) with critical expansion points (CEPs) to quantify post‐peak damage stages in deep‐buried rock masses via plane strain compression test (PSCT). CEP hysteresis&interval ratios reveal bearing performance dynamics and failure severity, advancing mechanistic insights into deep underground rock ...
