The role of the particle aspect ratio in the discharge of a narrow silo
The time evolution of silo discharge is investigated for different granular materials made of spherical or elongated grains in laboratory experiments and with discrete element model (DEM) calculations.

The modeling of free-fall arch formation in granular flow through an aperture
In this study, to predict the formation of the free-fall arch via granular flow through an aperture, an analytical model has been developed based on the particle-scale force equilibrium. This model calculates the size and location of the meta-stable arch

Granular flow around a cylindrical obstacle in an inclined chute
Shock waves and granular vacua are important phenomena for studying the behavior of granular materials due to the dramatic change in flow properties across shock wave and the particle-free feature at the boundary of granular vacuum. In this paper, we use

New Insights into the Estimation of Impact Load of Granular Flow against a Rigid Wall
The installation of a rigid wall is a main approach to mitigate a granular flow. The methods of the impact load against a rigid wall still remains a challenge.

A numerical study on the effects of particle size distribution on run-out distance of granular flow
The discrete element method is a powerful numerical tool widely employed in granular flow simulations. To reduce computational costs, either monodisperse granular models or models with a limited number of particle sizes are used to estimate the risk of ...

Improved evaluation of granular media flows using an X-ray scanning compatible cone-plate setup [PDF]
To understand the typically heterogeneous flowing behavior of granular materials, it is important to combine flow tests with three-dimensional imaging. To probe the flow behavior of granular materials over a wide range of flow rates, it is imperative to ...

WHERE THE GRANULAR FLOWS BEND [PDF]
Based on IMaX/Sunrise data, we report on a previously undetected phenomenon in solar granulation. We show that in a very narrow region separating granules and intergranular lanes the spectral line width of the Fe I 5250.2 A line becomes extremely small. We offer an explanation of this observation with the help of magneto-convection simulations.

Granular shear flows exhibit complex transitional regimes that are dramatically affected by the pressure level and shear stress state. New advances in granular shear tests at low pressure have enlightened the understanding of the two granular shear flow ...

Many processes in geophysical and industrial settings involve the flow of granular materials down a slope. In order to investigate the granular dynamics, we report a series of laboratory experiments conducted by releasing grains at a steady rate from a localized source on a rough inclined plane.
