The etiology of granuloma inguinale has interested investigators in this field throughout the world since the disease was first adequately described by Conyers and Daniels in 1896. Donovan created widespread interest in the disease by describing cellular inclusions which were constantly found in smears obtained from cases of granuloma inguinale.
