The microbiology of periapical granulomas

Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, 1990
Of the 16 periapical granulomas studied, 14 (88%) yielded a positive growth when homogenized and cultured. The concentration of colony-forming units per milliliter of the suspension ranged from 10(1.3) to 10(4.0) (mean 10(2.2)). A total of 47 isolates comprising 26 (55%) facultative anaerobes and 21 (45%) strict anaerobes were obtained.

Midkine Expression in Human Periapical Granulomas

Journal of Endodontics, 2011
The expression of midkine (MK), a heparin-binding growth factor, is increased in various human tumors, making it a promising tumor marker and target for tumor therapy. MK is also related to the regulation of the development and etiology of chronic or autoimmune diseases; however, the involvement of MK in apical periodontitis has never been examined ...

Periapical granuloma associated with extracted teeth

Nigerian Journal of Clinical Practice, 2011
This article aims to determine the incidence of periapical granuloma from extracted teeth and correlate the clinical diagnoses with the histopathological types of periapical granuloma.Over a period of eight months, a prospective study designed as a routine biopsy of recoverable periapical tissues obtained from patients who had single tooth extraction ...

Periapical granulomas and cysts

European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1970
Abstract— A clinical and radiographic study was undertaken on 1,600 periapical lesions from 1,133 patients referred for extractions or apicoectomies. The clinical findings as well as the radiographic size (diameter) of the lesions were recorded. When this diameter measured less than 5 mm, the pathologic tissue was left in the bone after extraction ...

The tuberculous dental periapical granuloma

American Journal of Orthodontics and Oral Surgery, 1943

Histological findings of human leprosy periapical granulomas

Journal of Endodontics, 1996
Histological analysis of human leprosy periapical granulomas was conducted to study the histological responses to Mycobacterium leprae. Many Langhans-type giant cells and epithelioid cell tubercles were observed, although M. leprae were not detected in leprosy periapical granulomas.

Immunoglobulin producing cells in human periapical granulomas

British Journal of Oral Surgery, 1983
Ten cases of periapical granuloma were stained for igG, IgA, IgM, IgD and IgE by the unlabelled antibody peroxidase-antiperoxidase complex method to investigate the class distribution of plasma cells within the lesions. The results indicated that IgG containing plasma cells predominated in all lesions and that IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE and IgD cells ...

Touton-like giant cells in periapical granulomas

Journal of Endodontics, 1989
Two types of multinucleated giant cells were observed in periapical granulomas--the foreign body type and the Touton type. In the Touton type, the nuclei were near the center of the cell, surrounded by foamy cytoplasm. Both types of giant cells reacted positively to lysozyme, alpha 1-antitrypsin and alpha 1-antichymotrypsin, indicating their ...
