Designing Graphic Design History
Journal of Design History, 2009This research is situated firmly within the discipline of graphic design history and was peer-reviewed by five reviewers for this internationally established journal, where it was remarked: ‘this essay offers an excellent contribution to the field’. The paper applies Clive Dilnot’s notions of design history to graphic design and through a case study of

Graphics in Optical Coating Design
Applied Optics, 1972Graphical displays of complex reflectance for nonabsorbing multilayer optical coatings based upon circle diagrams are presented. Similar displays are then developed for absorbing films. The two types of display are used to analyze several common multilayers, and a repetitive structure with period characteristics is introduced.

A database design for graphical models
ACM SIGPLAN Notices, 1990In this paper we present an engineering data management system, that is a database which is supposed to store and support the manipulation of data about solid geometry objects. Some technical aspects are particularly addressed, which are related to the modeling environment, system architecture and data manipulation language.

Graphic design of pinhole cameras
Applied Optics, 1979The paper describes a graphic technique for the analysis and optimization of pinhole size and focal length. The technique is based on the use of the transfer function of optical elements described by Scott (1959) to construct the transfer function of a circular pinhole camera. This transfer function is the response of a component or system to a pattern

Cartography and Graphic Design
2009Between cartography and graphic design there are some theoretical and practical similarities. Both domains use practically the same techniques and their main goal is to communicate effectively and in a useful way. Methodological principles of graphic design seem to be very interesting for cartographers. For example, the principle “form follows function”
