When is evolutionary branching in predator-prey systems possible with an explicit carrying capacity? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In this study we use the theory of adaptive dynamics firstly to explore the differences in evolutionary behaviour of a generalist predator (or more specifically an omnivorous or intraguild predator) in a predator-prey model, with a Holling Type II ...

Should we promote grassland ? A microeconomic analysis

open access: yes, 2002
Unfavourable or no incentives at all make the farmers use insufficient grassland areas, from the society's and economic efficiency's point of view. On the one hand the CAP premium encourage to exploit more crops and less grasslands than what real profit ...

Food Security Versus Environmental Health: The Nitrogen Dilemma

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth and, consequently, crop production. However, the cycling of nitrogen in the environment can have negative effects. Here, we review the historical development of scientific and public awareness of these effects and the influence this has had on political action to control them.

Climate Change and Reduction of Soil Organic Layer Thickness Increases Drought Risk in Mountain Forests of the Northern Alps

open access: yesJournal of Plant Nutrition and Soil Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background On ca. 10% of the forested sites in the Bavarian Alps (Germany) mountain, forest soils (so‐called folic histosols) are characterized by thick organic layers overlying poorly weathered calcareous parent material. Aim These organic layers play a critical role in releasing water and nutrients for vegetation, yet they are also sensitive

Carbon isotope geochemistry of organic matter in volcanic paleosols constrains paleo‐environmental variations

open access: yesJournal of Quaternary Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Fiorano quarry paleosol developed within the Colli Albani volcanic district (Italy) in the time interval bracketed by the deposition of the Pozzolanelle pyroclastic‐flow unit (365 ± 4 ka) and the emplacement of the Capo di Bove lava flow (277 ± 2 ka).

Grassland management, soil biota and ecosystem services in sandy soils [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Recent legislative restrictions on the use of fertilizers and irrigation, and a quest for sustainable farming systems have drawn renewed attention to the functioning of the soil and the ecosystem services it provides. Soil biota play an important role in

Spatiotemporal Characteristics and Driving Factors of the Energy Carbon Footprint and Vegetation Carbon Carrying Capacity in China

open access: yesEnergies
This study systematically quantified the carbon footprint generated by China’s consumption of eight major fossil energy sources (coal, coke, crude oil, petrol, kerosene, diesel, fuel oil, and natural gas), alongside the carbon carrying capacity of four ...

Burrow use by Saharan striped polecat (Poecilictis libyca) in an agricultural area of central Tunisia

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
Saharan striped polecats in agricultural landscapes use many burrows (30–35 per season), facilitated by sandy soils. Burrow sharing is rare and mainly occurs between males and females during mating. Habitat use shifts seasonally, reflecting disturbance and soil conditions. Maintaining stable sandy habitats may be critical for persistence.

Identifying areas of homogeneous grassland management based on iterative segmentation of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data

open access: yes, 2021
Remote sensing data in combination with image segmentation approaches have been shown to be valuable for identifying homogeneous areas such as agricultural land parcels.

Estimation of grassland aboveground biomass in northern China based on topography-climate-remote sensing data

open access: yesEcological Indicators
Accurately assessing grassland aboveground biomass (AGB) over large areas is essential for the conservation of grassland resource and the improvement of ecological environment.
