Why Gratzel’s cell works so well

Inorganica Chimica Acta, 2008
Abstract In Gratzel’s cell, the electrons injected by the photo-excitation of dye molecules, anchored to a mesoporous TiO 2 film, efficiently diffuse to the back contact achieving solar energy conversion at efficiencies exceeding 10%. The mesoporous TiO 2 surface constituted of randomly arranged nanocrystallites with a roughness factor of the order

Polarization losses in Gratzel solar cells with a porous anode

Journal of Engineering Thermophysics, 2011
Polarization losses under the redox reaction on the anode and cathode in the iodine electrolyte of a Gratzel solar cell are considered. It is shown that the value of the maximum cell current is bounded by the diffusion transfer of ions on the cathode or anode, depending on the electrolyte composition.

Concept and demonstration of all organic Gratzel solar cell (dye sensitized solar cell)

Applied Physics Letters, 2006
The authors present the concept of “all organic Gratzel/dye sensitized solar cell” and demonstrate such a device using high Tauc band gap (above 2.5eV) amorphous carbon thin films doped with nitrogen (n type) deposited by microwave assisted surface wave plasma chemical vapor deposition and sensitized with copper-phthalocyanine thin films.

Quantum Chemical Investigation of Cluster Models for TiO2 Nanoparticles with Water-Derived Ligand Passivation: Studies of Excess Electron States and Implications for Charge Transport in the Gratzel Cell

The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, 2009
We present hybrid DFT calculations for large TiO 2 cluster models in the gas phase and in solution. Two clusters are investigated, one derived from the anatase bulk structure and the second from rutile. The surface are passivated with hydroxyl and water ligands, and continuum solvation is used to model bulk solvent in subset of calculations.

Life Cycle Assessment of Gratzel-type cell production for non conventional photovoltaics from novel Organic Dyes

2011
In the context of a constant energy demand growth, the interest of the scientific community is progressively moving towards renewable energy sources. Among these, photovoltaics has a prominent role. With the aim of overcoming the limits of silicon production, research turned itself to the development of new photovoltaic technologies based on ...
