How to stay wild in a highly domesticated landscape? Spatiotemporal behaviour of wolves in Germany
Wild animals can adapt to the increasing presence of humans by either becoming accustomed to it or by avoiding humans by spatiotemporal separation. The return of the wolf to the German lowlands raised the opportunity to study wolf behaviour in one of the most densely populated and fragmented countries in Europe, in an area where topography offers no ...

Why wolves walk – drivers of daily movement in a social large carnivore
Animal movement patterns are influenced by a range of extrinsic and intrinsic factors, including the distribution of resources, human disturbance, landscape connectivity, species interactions, and individual traits. We examined factors associated with daily movement distance (DMD) and linearity in 20 territorial Scandinavian wolves Canis lupus during ...

Road mortality mitigation for red wolves requires a landscape approach
In 1980, the red wolf Canis rufus was declared extinct in the wild. However, starting in 1987, a captive breeding program allowed for a reintroduction effort in and around Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge (Alligator River NWR), North Carolina, USA. In 2012 the wild red wolf population peaked at about 120 individuals.

Using radiotelemetry, we found that the movement and home range of the endangered Sacalia bealei varied significantly across reproductive classes and seasons, with males exhibiting greater movement than females during wet and mating seasons. The species exhibits strong aquatic dependence, favoring deep pools interspaced among riffle‐pool sequences ...

The study explores how beavers (Castor spp.) affect endangered freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) in European rivers. Beaver dams can harm small, fragmented mussel populations by reducing flow, increasing sediment, and potentially limiting host fish movement, while larger populations may benefit from improved bed stability and ...
