To release or not to release? Understanding sawfish release behavior in a global south complex fishery

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
This demonstrates the gap between existing top‐down laws and strategies (Current Approach) and the barriers fishers face while proposing an alternative pathway (Proposed Approach) based on collaboration, capacity building, and addressing socio‐economic factors.

Associations between reproductive factors and the prevalence of depression: findings from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2005–2018

open access: yesBMC Public Health
Background This study aims to explore the relationship between female reproductive factors (age at first birth (AFB), age at last birth (ALB), gravidity, and number of live birth (NLB)) and prevalence of depression among the US women.

Glucose Challenge Test Values Within the Normal Range and Long‐Term Risk of Type 2 Diabetes by Pre‐Pregnancy BMI: A Retrospective Cohort Study

open access: yesDiabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Aims Gestational diabetes (GDM) is the strongest known risk factor for maternal type 2 diabetes. However, little is known about type 2 diabetes risk in women with normal glucose challenge test (GCT) results during pregnancy. We investigated the association between GCT results in the normal range and type 2 diabetes risk, both overall and ...

Birch Leaves as a Minefield: Do Trichomes Mediate Neonate Caterpillar Site Selection?

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
We investigated whether neonate Drepana arcuata caterpillars select leaf sites based on trichome distribution. Specifically, we assessed where larvae establish on leaves, quantified trichome distribution on leaves, and tested whether neonates avoid leaf trichomes. Neonates preferentially established and fed on areas with fewer trichomes, especially the

Assessing the Efficacy of Steinernema carpocapsae for Biological Control of Megaselia halterata on Mushroom Farms

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, EarlyView.
Steinernema carpocapsae applications averaged 40%–60% mortality of mushroom phorid larvae in laboratory experiments. Survival experiments showed that nematode populations drop 50% approximately 5 days post application in mushroom compost. ABSTRACT Mushroom phorid flies (Megaselia halterata; MPF) are a major pest of commercial mushroom production, where

Effects of non‐host traces on behavioural responses of an egg parasitoid to substrate‐borne semiochemicals in a multi‐herbivore scenario

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
In open arena assays, the response of the egg parasitoid Trissolcus basalis to substrate‐borne semiochemicals left by the host Nezara viridula was affected by the non‐host Spodoptera littoralis. Non‐host larval traces reduced T. basalis residence time spent on walking traces from gravid N. viridula females but did not affect responses to walking traces

Preference‐performance relationship in the thistle tortoise beetle: Implications for its realised host range

open access: yesEcological Entomology, EarlyView.
There was a positive relationship between adult preference and larval performance. However, the strength of the relationship ranged from weak to strong depending on the measure of adult preference. The adult beetle showed substantial flexibility in host plant selection and equal performance across most thistle hosts.

Habitat Choice as a Function of Lighting Environment in Bluefin Killifish

open access: yesEthology, EarlyView.
This experiment tested habitat preference in bluefin killifish as a function of lighting environment for fish from a swamp and a spring population. Swamps are red‐shifted habitats and springs are full spectrum. Fish from the swamp population preferred the red‐shifted lighting environment, while spring fish were tolerant of both lighting environments ...

Compromised DNA replication in gut cells underlies sensitivity to genotoxic stress in the tardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris

open access: yesThe FEBS Journal, EarlyView.
DNA damage in the tardigrade Hypsibius exemplaris elicits distinct cellular outcomes depending on replication status. While non‐replicating cells tolerate genotoxic stress, constitutively replicating cells undergo irreversible replication failure upon DNA damage, leading to loss of tissue homeostasis, fat depletion, sterility, and organismal death ...

Examining the Impact of Derelict Pots on Blue Crab (Callinectes sapidus) Catch and Harvest Within a Recreational Fishery

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Derelict fishing gear can negatively affect marine ecosystems through mortality in coastal environments. This study explored the impact of derelict and active crab pots on recreational blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) catch rates and landings in a Mid‐Atlantic estuary by deploying experimental pots in four habitat strata within three sections ...
