Into the Black Box: Explicating Black Boxes and Its Effect on Mechanistic Reasoning

open access: yesJournal of Research in Science Teaching, Volume 63, Issue 4-5, Page 412-432, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Mechanistic reasoning is a powerful and vital approach for science students to explain scientific phenomena. Current research on students' mechanistic reasoning aims to enhance unpacking, that is, the identification and description of entities at lower scalar levels.

Seafloor Sediments, Morphologic Features, and Geotechnical Properties of Harrison Bay in the Alaskan Beaufort Sea

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Sediments on Arctic continental shelves are impacted by sea ice and ice‐related processes for up to 9 months per year. As a result, seabed morphology in cold regions can exhibit features such as ice scours which are absent on lower‐latitude shelves.

Radiative Forcing and Ozone Depletion of a Decade of Satellite Megaconstellation Missions

open access: yesEarth's Future, Volume 14, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Satellite megaconstellations (SMCs) are driving rapid increases in rocket launch and re‐entry rates, emitting pollutants throughout the atmosphere. The environmental impact of SMCs lacks characterization to determine the need for regulation. We utilize a global 3D emission inventory of recent (2020–2022) space activity that distinguishes SMC ...

Assessing Deposit‐Derived Pyroclastic Flow Hazard at Stromboli (Italy): 1. Reconstruction of the Dynamics of the 11 September 1930 Event

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Stromboli volcano (Italy) is known for its persistent explosive activity punctuated by more energetic explosions called paroxysms. During paroxysms, pyroclastic density currents, triggered by the gravitational instability of hot pyroclastic deposits, can occur.

Characterization of Mass Wasting Events on Lunar Maria Using Mini‐RF Radar Observations

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, Volume 131, Issue 5, May 2026.
Abstract Evidence of mass wasting has been observed on the Moon since at least the Apollo era. Surface features indicative of mass wasting processes are traditionally characterized geomorphologically using visible images. In this study, we aim to better understand mass wasting features via their radar properties, which can provide insights into the ...
