Improvements of gravity assisted wickless heat pipes

Energy Conversion and Management, 2000
Abstract The performance of conventional gravity assisted heat pipes and modified heat pipes with a separator in the adiabatic section is investigated experimentally. Heat pipes with a three layered wick in the evaporator section, in addition to the separator, are investigated.

Effects of Gravity on the Performance of Pulsating Heat Pipes

Journal of Thermophysics and Heat Transfer, 2004
Pulsating heat pipes made of a thin aluminium plate (250 × 60 × 2.2 mm) with small internal channels and charged with a refrigerant (R-114) have been tested under normal to high gravity (1‐2.5 g0) and reduced gravity ( ∼± ±0.02 g0 )l evels to investigate the effect of gravity on their heat transport characteristics.

Investigation of heat transfer on the Dowthern A gravity assisted heat pipe

Wärme- und Stoffübertragung, 1993
An experimental study on heat transfer performance of a gravity-assisted heat pipe is described. Dowtherm A has been used as working fluid. The effect of fill ratio, inclination angle, heat length ratio, and thermal resistance on the rate of heat flow were investigated.

A design procedure for gravity-assisted heat pipe heat exchanger

Journal of Heat Recovery Systems, 1984
Abstract This paper presents a theoretical approach to the design of gravity-assisted heat pipe heat exchangers (GAHPHE). Based on this analysis, the variation of overall effectiveness of GAHPHE with C e /C e , for different values of: tube spacing normal to the direction of flow; number of fins per metre; fin thickness and evaporator

Performance Characteristics of Gravity-Assisted Aluminum Extruded Heat Pipes

Journal of Heat Recovery Systems, 1982
Abstract Experimental investigation of the heat transfer characteristics of gravity-assisted aluminum extruded heat pipes has been carried out. Relatively high rates of heat transfer have been achieved operating in this manner, with heat pipes containing simple and inexpensive wick and Freon-12 (R-12) as working fluid.

A thermoelectric cooler coupled with a gravity-assisted heat pipe: An analysis from heat pipe perspective

Energy Conversion and Management, 2018
Thermoelectric cooler (TEC) is attractive for cooling electronic devices because of its light, compact size, quiet and vibration free characteristics. However, its cooling performance is restricted by the thermal resistance at TEC hot side. To improve the TEC cooling performance, a gravity-assisted heat pipe (GAHP) was proposed to attach on the TEC hot

Design of water-to-air gravity-assisted heat pipe heat exchanger

Journal of Heat Recovery Systems, 1985
Abstract This paper describes a design study on a water-to-air gravity-assisted heat pipe heat exchanger. The characteristics of the heat exchanger are studied analytically to present the performance of the heat exchanger. The variation of overall effectiveness of exchanger with C e /C c and Re ∗ for different values of

PERFORMANCE LIMITS IN GRAVITY-ASSISTED HYDROGEN HEAT PIPES

Chemical Engineering Communications, 1989
Small diameter, gravity-assisted, hydrogen heat pipes were fabricated and tested with performance limits as a function of tilt angle and working fluid inventory reported. The fabrication method, the filling sequence, and the test procedure are also described.

Gravity Effects on the Performance of a Flat Loop Heat Pipe

Microgravity Science and Technology, 2009
A loop heat pipe with flat evaporator (FLHP) is manufactured from copper, and filled with ultrapure water as the working fluid. The heat transfer characteristics have been studied experimentally. The gravity impacts the heat transfer characteristics of the FLHP in different orientations.
