Gray scale processing of hydrographic maps
Proceedings of 13th International Conference on Pattern Recognition, 1996This paper investigates how gray scale information can be used in a hydrographic map understanding system to improve the system performance. To process gray scale scanned map images, we have implemented a topographic analysis method and a binary analysis method.

The chance of producing these types of maps with a personal computer and a standard matrix printer, makes it possible to obtain good quality maps at low cost and with limited computer facilities.

Robust color-to-gray via nonlinear global mapping
ACM SIGGRAPH Asia 2009 papers, 2009This paper presents a fast color-to-gray conversion algorithm which robustly reproduces the visual appearance of a color image in grayscale. The conversion preserves feature discriminability and reasonable color ordering, while respecting the original lightness of colors, by simple optimization of a nonlinear global mapping.

Semi-Invariant Reversible Mapping from Color to Gray
