Real‐World Performance of CSF Kappa Free Light Chains in the 2024 McDonald Criteria

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Kappa free light chains (KFLCs) in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) have a similar performance to CSF‐restricted oligoclonal bands (OCB) for multiple sclerosis (MS) diagnosis. To help with implementation, we set out to resolve several remaining uncertainties: (1) performance in a real‐world cohort and the 2024 McDonald criteria; (2 ...

Ketogenic Diet as an Epigenetic Therapy in SETD1B‐Related Epilepsy

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Histone lysine methyltransferases such as SETD1B regulate chromatin structure and gene transcription. Ketone bodies, including butyrate, act as histone deacetylase inhibitors. We report a 4‐year‐old boy with SETD1B‐related absence epilepsy, refractory to conventional medications, who achieved sustained > 90% seizure reduction on the Modified ...

Hybrid warfare and hybrid threats today and tomorrow: towards an analytical framework

open access: yesJournal on Baltic Security, 2019
This article first traces the origin of hybrid warfare and the label game surrounding the concept, asking whether it is merely old wine in a new bottle, and if so, whether it is still a useful concept. It is found that while being old wine in new bottles,

Wear behavior of composite strengthened gray cast iron by austempering and laser hardening treatment

open access: yesJournal of Materials Research and Technology, 2020
The present study mainly investigated the phase transformation and wear performance of laser hardened austempered gray cast iron specimens. Ball-on-Plate reciprocating sliding wear tests with PAO4 base oil were carried out on untreated, quench-tempered ...

Normal‐Appearing White Matter Injury Mediates Chronic Deep Venous Hypoxia and Disease Progression in Multiple Sclerosis

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective To explore how cerebral hypoxia and Normal‐Appearing White Matter (NAWM) integrity affect MS lesion burden and clinical course. Methods Seventy‐nine MS patients, including 13 clinically isolated syndrome (CIS) patients and 66 relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) patients, and 44 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited from ...

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Copper–Tungsten Composites for Heat Sink Applications in High‐Power Electronics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article demonstrates the successful qualification of a copper–tungsten composite for laser powder bed fusion. The resulting components exhibited high density, high thermal conductivity, and reduced thermal expansion. Heat sinks with complex geometries were successfully manufactured, clearly showcasing the material's potential for additive ...

Gray zone problem in athletes [PDF]

open access: yesEuropean Heart Journal, 2007
Sudden death is the most unpleasant complication of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), which is the leading cause of cardiac death in athletes. The accurate diagnosis of HCM is a more important problem than its risk stratification profile.1,2 An early and correct diagnosis of HCM, particularly in asymptomatic subjects, is crucial during pre ...
