Designing green and sustainable experiments for undergraduate organic chemistry labs [PDF]

open access: yesAswan University Journal of Environmental Studies
Four synthesis experiments were redesigned for university chemistry laboratories via green and sustainable methodology: synthesis of acetanilide; synthesis of dibromopropanone; synthesis of stilbene di-bromide; and synthesis of nitro salicylic acid.

Inorganic Green Pigments Based on LaSr2AlO5

open access: yesCeramics, 2023
La1.03Sr1.97Al0.97M0.03O5 (M = Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu) samples were synthesized using a citrate sol–gel method to develop a novel environmentally friendly inorganic green pigment. Among them, the Co-doped sample exhibited a vivid yellow, but not green. Then,

Exploring and Re-Assessing Reverse Anomeric Effect in 2-Iminoaldoses Derived from Mono- and Polynuclear Aromatic Aldehydes

open access: yesMolecules
A curious and noticeable structural feature in Schiff bases from 2-aminoaldoses is the fact that imino tautomers arranged equatorially in the most stable ring conformation exhibit a counterintuitive reverse anomeric effect (RAE) in the mutarotational ...

Using systems thinking to connect green principles and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in a reaction stoichiometry module

open access: yesGreen Chemistry Letters and Reviews, 2023
To help students address problems related to climate change, chemistry fundamentals are taught using sustainable principles. The principles of green chemistry and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are guides to help us reach a ...

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Modelling of the Citric Acid Production from Crude Glycerol by Wild-Type Yarrowia lipolytica DSM 8218 Using Response Surface Methodology (RSM)

open access: yesLife, 2022
Crude glycerol is the main by-product of the biodiesel manufacturing industry (10% w/w). Its use as a substrate in microbial fermentations is a concrete strategy to efficiently address its market surplus.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.
