Encapsulins are protein nanocompartments that play an important role in iron storage. In the Myxococcus xanthus encapsulin system, two cargo proteins called EncB and EncC contribute to iron mineralization. Here, we show that EncB and EncC generate iron‐containing minerals with distinct chemical compositions, suggesting that the composition of stored ...

Mycobacterial 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA carboxylase uses a mobile biotin‐carrying domain to shuttle a carboxyl group between two catalytic sites, enabling carboxylation of 3‐methylcrotonyl‐CoA during leucine breakdown. Cryo‐electron microscopy captures the carrier at both sites and reveals an inward loop movement that may prevent futile rebinding to the ...

The Shewanella oneidensis Fic enzyme SoFic targets the switch‐I region of EF‐Tu for AMPylation
Fic enzymes mediate diverse post‐translational modifications across all domains of life, including AMPylation. Prokaryotic EF‐Tu can be AMPylated and deAMPylated by the conserved Fic enzyme SoFic. Structural and biochemical approaches were used to characterize the effect of AMPylation on EF‐Tu, SoFic's enzymatic activities, and the enzyme‐target ...

Color Image Denoising Using The Green Channel Prior
Noise removal in the standard RGB (sRGB) space remains a challenging task, in that the noise statistics of real-world images can be different in R, G and B channels. In fact, the green channel usually has twice the sampling rate in raw data and a higher signal-to-noise ratio than red/blue ones.

Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Exact construction and uniqueness of the coupled-channel Green's function
We present a rigorous construction and uniqueness proof of the matrix Green's function for coupled radial Schrödinger equations with symmetric coupling potentials. The Green's matrix $g_{γγ'}(R,R')$ is built from two fundamental sets of $N$ linearly independent solutions, regular and outgoing, of the coupled radial equations.

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

Enhanced “Green Nudging”: Tapping the channels of cultural transmission
This paper shows how to increase the effectiveness of “green nudging” as a policy measure to induce sustainable preferences. Evidence indicates that the behavioral impact of “green nudges” is subject to decay. To address this problem, we propose “enhanced green nudges”, which incorporate learning biases as features of humans’ capacity for culture ...
