Through various processes the nitrogen oxides (NOX) interact with trace gases in the troposphere and stratosphere which do absorb in the spectral range relevant to the greenhouse effect (infrared wavelengths). The net effect is an enhancement of the greenhouse effect.

The climate change induced by man-made releases of carbon dioxide and other trace gases is discussed. The level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased from an estimated 293 ppm in 1880 to 335 ppm in 1980, due mainly to the increased use of fossil fuels. That level is expected to double in the next century.

Environmental Science & Technology, 1984Two studies on the global warming trend are discussed. The EPA study predicts that CO/sub 2/ levels will reach 590 ppm (twice preindustrial levels) by 2060. Increases in CO/sub 2/ and other greenhouse gases would most likely cause a 2/sup 0/C warming by 2040 and a 5/sup 0/C increase by 2100.

In the next 80 to 130 years, concentration of carbon dioxide is expected to double and the rest of the greenhouse gases to contribute half as much again to the greenhouse warming.
