Bioinspired greigite magnetic nanocrystals: chemical synthesis and biomedicine applications [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2013
Large scale greigite with uniform dimensions has stimulated significant demands for applications such as hyperthermia, photovoltaics, medicine and cell separation, etc. However, the inhomogeneity and hydrophobicity for most of the as prepared greigite crystals has limited their applications in biomedicine.

Micromagnetic Constraints on the Grain Size Dependence and Magnetic Stability of Sub‐Micron Monoclinic Pyrrhotite (Fe7S8)

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, Volume 131, Issue 2, February 2026.
Abstract We present the first micromagnetic simulations for sub‐micron monoclinic 4C pyrrhotite (Fe7S8 ${\text{Fe}}_{7}{\mathrm{S}}_{8}$), a common mineral in rocks and sediments and an important mineral in paleomagnetic studies. Previous experimental studies on the magnetic properties of pyrrhotite had limited control over granulometry and focused ...

Paleomagnetism in Lake Pannon: Problems, Pitfalls, and Progress in Using Iron Sulfides for Magnetostratigraphy

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2018
Dating of upper Miocene sediments of the Pannonian Basin (Hungary) has proven difficult due to the endemic nature of biota, scarcity of reliable radio isotopic data, and generally inconsistent magnetostratigraphic results.

Improved methods for mass production of magnetosomes and applications: a review

open access: yesMicrobial Cell Factories, 2020
Magnetotactic bacteria have the unique ability to synthesize magnetosomes (nano-sized magnetite or greigite crystals arranged in chain-like structures) in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Greigite and the magnetic properties of sediments [PDF]

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography, 1990
X‐ray diffraction spectra of freeze‐dried sediments from a lake in the English Lake District positively identified the presence of greigite, a magnetic iron sulfide (Fe3S4) mineral. The sediments also show considerable loss of magnetic intensity when wet samples are allowed to oxidize.

Facies analysis provides new insights into event bed deposition in a hadal trench environment

open access: yesSedimentology, Volume 73, Issue 2, Page 441-477, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Hadal trenches preserve exceptional sedimentary archives of past geological events, yet their depositional processes remain poorly constrained. The Japan Trench captures complex earthquake‐triggered event beds that record repeated sediment‐gravity flows that deliver terrigenous and biogenic material into the trench, informing palaeoseismic ...

Untangling inconsistent magnetic polarity records through an integrated rock magnetic analysis: A case study on Neogene sections in East Timor

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, 2014
Inconsistent polarity patterns in sediments are a common problem in magnetostratigraphic and paleomagnetic research. Multiple magnetic mineral generations result in such remanence “haystacks.” Here we test whether end‐member modeling of isothermal ...

Geoarchaeological Investigation of Early Neolithic Lagoonal Fringe Landscapes in the Netherlands

open access: yesGeoarchaeology, Volume 41, Issue 1, January/February 2026.
ABSTRACT Coastal wetlands have historically been portrayed as too marginal for early crop cultivation during the Mesolithic–Neolithic transition due to their dynamic hydrology, low elevation, and poor drainage. However, growing evidence suggests that these environments played a crucial role in the spread of agriculture. We examined buried and submerged

Sedimentary Greigite Formation

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Science
Revised thermodynamic data for greigite (Fe3S4) indicate that it is a stable sedimentary Fe-S phase. Greigite was previously regarded as metastable. Equilibrium computations using revised data explain apparently contradictory observations regarding greigite occurrences in sediments and sedimentary rocks.

The Role of Fe(II) Minerals in Carbon Stabilization in Coastal and Estuarine Anoxic Environments

open access: yesGlobal Biogeochemical Cycles, Volume 40, Issue 1, January 2026.
Abstract Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides are well‐known for their role in organic carbon (OC) stabilization in terrestrial soils. Coastal and estuarine soils typically act as iron sinks and receive a high input of OC. However, tidal submersion induces anoxic and reducing conditions that favor the microbial reductive dissolution of Fe(III) (oxyhydr)oxides ...
