The mortality of British Grey Herons
Bird Study, 1979This study of Grey Heron mortality suggests that the British population would have been in a parlous state if legal protection (which increased first-year survival) had not been introduced. Even now, an increased proportion of first-summer birds needs to join the breeding population for numbers to be maintained.

Parasitic helminths in grey heron (Ardea cinerea) chicks
Biologia, 2015Parasitological studies were carried out on pulli (n = 20) collected on a breeding colony near the Wloclawski Reservoir on the Vistula River (Central Poland). Larvae of the nematode Contracaecum rudolphii (mean intensity of infection 9.3) were detected in the stomachs of all chicks, with adult worms present in two chicks.

Disseminated Avian Mycobacteriosis in a Free-Living Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea)
Avian Diseases, 2013Wild birds share with humans the capacity for moving fast over large distances. During migratory movements, birds carry pathogens that can be transmitted between species. One of these concerning pathogens is Mycobacterium spp. A necropsy was performed in a grey heron (Ardea cinerea) that had been medically treated for a polyarthritic process.

Buller’s New Zealand specimen of grey heron
Notornis, 1974The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) was placed on the Suspense List of the 1970 OSNZ Checklist, as the Checklist Committee could not confirm the existence of an 1898 specimen reported by Buller. Buller’s “third collection,” including this heron, is in Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. The grey heron should be readmitted to

Dispersal from the Natal Colony of the Grey Heron Ardea cinerea Nesting in Poland
Acta Ornithologica, 2021Natal dispersal is the movement from the natal site to the colony of the first reproduction, while breeding dispersal is the movement from one breeding colony to another within or between breeding seasons. This is a major determinant of genetic structure and a key component of population dynamics.

The response of Grey HeronsArdea cinereato changes in prey abundance
Bird Study, 2011Capsule Herons responded to the lower abundance of a preferred fish by switching prey. Aims To investigate how Grey Herons respond to the decline in abundance of a preferred fish, the Round Goby Neogobius melanostomus. Methods Grey Herons Ardea cinerea breeding in the Gulf of Gdansk area (Baltic Sea) were the study population.

Reactions of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea) to seismic tremors
Journal für Ornithologie, 1997Earthquakes are usually a matter of seconds and while experiencing the phenomenon few observe the behaviour of the animals during the phenomenon. On 22 November 1995, at 06:16 hrs Israel Standard Time, an earthquake of a magnitude (Mw) of 7.2 on the Richter scale shocked Eilat, Israel.

Assessment of Grey Heron predation on fish communities: the case of the largest European colony

Relating Grey Heron survival rates to winter weather conditions
Bird Study, 1979The mathematical description of ringing recovery data can become unwieldy, and consequently less useful, when many parameters are introduced to account for different factors affecting the numbers of recoveries. The use of weather data for Grey Herons simplifies the mathematics and suggests biological explanations.
