With increasing shares of power electronics-based generation in power grids, grid-following converters may become unstable during faults, resulting from a loss of phase-locked loop (PLL) synchronism. Even when current grid code low voltage ride through (LVRT) requirements are met, PLLs may still become unstable under high shares of grid-following ...

Grid-Following and Grid-Forming Converter Control Comparison Under Fault Conditions
2021 IEEE 12th Energy Conversion Congress & Exposition - Asia (ECCE-Asia), 2021Traditionally control of grid-connected converters is based on a grid-following structure, where a Phase Locked Loop is responsible for tracking the angle of the AC grid. However, such control structure leads to stability problems for weak and low inertia grids. Then, a grid-forming control structure is presented as a potential solution.

Modeling and Control of Grid-following Single-Phase Voltage-Sourced Converter
2020 52nd North American Power Symposium (NAPS), 2021This paper presents modeling and control of a grid-following single-phase voltage-sourced converter (VSC). The electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation is carried out via MATLAB/Simulink with SimPowerSystems Toolbox. Detailed IGBT switches are included in the DC/AC inverter model. Second-order generalized integrator-based Phase-Locked-Loop (SOGI-PLL)

Multisampled current control of grid-following voltage source converters
Pulse width modulation (PWM)–based current control is widely used in grid-following voltage source converters (VSCs). However, a large control delay is induced in the regular PWM process, which limits the current control bandwidth and deteriorates VSC-grid interactive stability. He, Shan; id_orcid 0000-0001-6789-8271 +1 more

ABSTRACTThe increasing penetration of renewable energy challenges single‐converter systems to simultaneously provide transient support and rapid response. Hybrid microgrids integrating grid‐forming (GFM) and grid‐following (GFL) converters are thus essential for dual‐high power systems.
