Stability of power networks with grid-forming converters

open access: yes2019 IEEE Milan PowerTech, 2019
Due to an increase in converter-interfaced renewable generation, power networks are becoming increasingly reliant on power converters, which have contrasting dynamical behaviour to rotating machines with large inertia. This results in new control challenges for the power grid.

Equivalent Active Distribution Networks Considering Grid Forming Converters

open access: yes2021 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Europe (ISGT Europe), 2021
S.527-531Converters connected to distribution networks play an increasingly important role in the generation mix. Especially grid forming converters providing inertia to the system are vital to handle critical events in a converter dominated system. Thus,

Controller design-oriented analysis of grid-forming converters for stability robustness enhancement [PDF]

open access: yesChinese Journal of Electrical Engineering, 2021
Grid-forming converters can suffer from control interaction problems in grid connections that can result in small-signal instability. Their inner-loop voltage controller tends to interact with the outer-loop power controller, rendering the controller ...

An Overview of Grid-Forming Control for Wind Turbine Converters

IECON 2021 – 47th Annual Conference of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, 2021
Wind turbine converters (WTCs) with grid forming (GFM) control can contribute to voltage and frequency support in the power system, by emulating synchronous machine (SM) dynamics, provided that there are sufficient buffers. Over the past few years, several control algorithms have been developed for the GFM operation of WTCs.

Systematic Design of a DLQR Applied to Grid-Forming Converters

IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Industrial Electronics, 2020
This paper proposes a systematic state-space procedure to design an optimal discrete-time linear quadratic regulator applied to grid-forming converters. A comprehensive mathematical modeling of a voltage-sourced converter with an LC output filter is performed and a systematic way of including digital resonant compensators is addressed.
