Comparative Impedance Characteristic Analysis of Grid‐Following and Grid‐Forming Inverters

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation, 2023
This paper comprehensively analyses the impedance characteristics of grid‐following (GFL) and grid‐forming (GFM) inverters at around synchronous frequency areas considering various operating and grid connection conditions and control settings.

Unified Grid-Forming/Following Inverter Control

open access: yesIEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, 2022
The paper describes an inverter control scheme which incorporates both a phase-locked loop (PLL) for voltage synchronization and power-frequency droop for load sharing.

Effect of grid‐following VSCs on frequency distribution of power grid

open access: yesIET Renewable Power Generation
The increasing penetration of grid‐following voltage source converters (GFL‐VSCs) in the power grid has changed the frequency dynamics of the system.

Revisiting Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Inverters: A Duality Theory [PDF]

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2022
Power electronic converters for integrating renewable energy resources into power systems can be divided into grid-forming and grid-following inverters. They possess certain similarities, but several important differences, which means that the relationship between them is quite subtle and sometimes obscure.

Grid-Forming and Grid-Following Based Microgrid Inverters Control

open access: yesIraqi Journal for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 2022
Microgrids (ℳ-grids) can be thought of as a small-scale electrical network comprised of a mix of Distributed Generation (DG) resources, storage devices, and a variety of load species. It provides communities with a stable, secure, and renewable energy supply in either off-grid (grid-forming) or on-grid (grid-following) mode.

An Alternative Control Structure for Grid-Following Converters of Inverter-Based Resources

open access: yesIEEE Open Access Journal of Power and Energy, 2023
In this paper, an alternative control structure of grid-following control is proposed and applied in inverter-based resources (IBRs). An IBR’s grid-following control normally employs Power/Voltage (P/V) control strategy to control the output real ...

Control of Grid-Following Inverters Under Unbalanced Grid Conditions

open access: yesIEEE Transactions on Energy Conversion, 2020
This paper proposes a new control scheme to eliminate the 3rd harmonic in the output currents of grid-following inverters under unbalanced grid conditions. Unbalanced grids adversely affect the performance of grid-following inverters due to the oscillations appearing on the DC-link voltage with a frequency twice the line frequency.

Research on Synchronization Control of Distributed Generation Based on Second-Order Unified Model

open access: yesZhongguo dianli, 2023
The existing grid connection controls of distributed generation inverters are mainly classified into the grid-following (GFL) control and the grid-forming (GFM) control.

Grid-following and grid-forming PV and wind turbines

open access: yes, 2021
As penetration of photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation systems driven by grid-connected power converters monotonously increases, unusual interactions between innovative and legacy generation systems become more concerning, since they threaten the system stability and reliability.
