Eccentric Exercise–Induced Muscle Damage Reduces Gross Efficiency

open access: yesMedicine & Science in Sports & Exercise
ABSTRACT Introduction The effect of eccentric exercise–induced muscle damage (EIMD) on cycling efficiency is unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of EIMD on gross and delta efficiency and the cardiopulmonary responses to cycle ergometry.

Efficient time integration methods for Gross-Pitaevskii equations with rotation term

open access: yesJournal of Computational Dynamics, 2019
The objective of this work is the introduction and investigation of favourable time integration methods for the Gross--Pitaevskii equation with rotation term. Employing a reformulation in rotating Lagrangian coordinates, the equation takes the form of a nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation involving a space-time-dependent potential. A natural approach that

Resolving the Structural Duality of Graphene Grain Boundaries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Cantilever ncAFM resolves the atomic structure of grain boundaries in graphene, revealing coexisting stable and metastable types. Both contain pentagon/heptagon defects, but metastable GBs show irregular geometries. Modeling shows metastable GBs form under compression, exhibiting vertical corrugation, while stable GBs are flat.

Negotiating in a Foreign Land: Understanding the Curious Interactions Between Intracellular Mitochondria and Internalized Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Therapeutic nano‐drug delivery systems interact with cellular mitochondria in a multitude of ways. While the complexity of such interactions disrupts the mitochondrial electron transport chain and increases reactive oxygen species production, thereby contributing to nanoparticle toxicity, they also present unique theranostic opportunities in diseases ...
