Gross cycling efficiency is not altered with and without toe-clips
Journal of Sports Sciences, 2008The aim of this study was to examine the claim that reductions of 8-18% in submaximal oxygen consumption (VO2) could be due to changing components on a Monark ergometer, from standard pedals without toe-clips or straps (flat pedals) to racing pedals of that era, which included toe-clips and straps (toe-clip pedals).

Determining the Gross Efficiency of a Boiler in Real Time
Power Technology and Engineering, 2014Atechnique for the continuous automatic determination of the gross efficiency of a boiler from the readings of regular process-control instruments was developed and implemented at a CHPP. The possibility of saving fuel by controlling the efficiency of the boiler in real time is discussed.

Gross Mechanical Efficiency Of Trained Wheelchair Racers
[1990] Proceedings of the Twelfth Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society, 2005This paper presents the results of a study of gross mechanical efficiency of racing wheelchair propulsion. Our subjects displayed maximum gross mechanical efficiencies over 30%. Typically trained runners show efficiencies of approximately 25%. Our results may help to explain why trained wheelchair racers are faster than runners.

Load and Velocity of Contraction Influence Gross and Delta Mechanical Efficiency
International Journal of Sports Medicine, 1992The effects of three different cadences and five different work rates on Gross (GE) and Delta Efficiency (DE) during cycle ergometry were studied. Fifteen well-trained cyclists exercised for 30 minutes at 60, 80, or 100 RPM on three different occasions. On each occasion, the load was increased every five minutes and corresponded to approximately 50, 60,

The Reliability and Adaptive Responses of Gross Efficiency in Hot Ambient Conditions
International Journal of Sports Medicine, 2014This study evaluated the reliability and adaptive responses of cycling gross efficiency (GE) performed at different intensities, across 3 trials in simulated hot (~30°C) temperatures. Twelve cyclists performed 3 hot (30±0.7ºC and RH of 50±2.9%) GE sessions, comprising 3 sub-maximal work rates of 150 W, 200 W and 250 W (5-min each), separated by 24-h ...

Effect of Duration and Exogenous Carbohydrate on Gross EfficiencyDuring Cycling
The Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2007The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of 2.5 hours of cycling with and without carbohydrate supplementation on gross efficiency (GE). Trained cyclists (N = 15) were tested for V(.-)O2max (53.6 + 2.2 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) and lactate threshold during incremental tests to exhaustion.

Assessing gross efficiency and propelling efficiency in swimming
2011Determining the efficiency (and the economy) of a movement is a primary goal for those interested in understanding, and possibly improving, human locomotion and/or sport’s performance. This goal is particularly difficult to achieve in swimming where different “efficiencies” could be computed based on the partitioning of mechanical power output into its
