In situ running-in analysis of ground gears
Wear, 2016The initial contact state between two interacting gears proves of interest due to empirical evidence indicating difference in life and efficiency in the long term due to the initial operation. Presented here is an analysis of the initial contact state of spur gears, made of case carburized 16MnCr5 steel, by the use of in situ surface measurements and ...

Minimization of effect of CBN wheel wear on ground gear errors
International Journal of Machine Tools and Manufacture, 1999Abstract Resistance to wear of CBN grinding wheels is much higher than that of conventional (Al2O3) wheels. However, CBN grinding wheels are seldom used in gear grinding, when production scale is small, due to the difficulty in truing. Moreover, wear of the grinding wheel greatly affects the accuracy of tooth trace, in most cases.

Numerical modelling of bottom trawling ground gear element on the seabed
Ocean Engineering, 2014Abstract This paper focuses on the numerical modelling of the interaction between gear components, rockhoppers, in particular and the seabed. This interaction is developed by using the Coupled Eulerian Lagrangian Method (CEL). To demonstrate the rate effect, a 2D finite element model is developed to analyse the pore pressure distribution and soil ...

Relative benthic disturbances of conventional and novel otter boards and ground gears
Fisheries Science, 2019A benthic trawl’s substrate contact (e.g. spreading mechanisms (i.e. otter boards) and ground gears) determines both its catching efficiency and the extent of perceived habitat impacts. The potential for mitigating habitat impacts was investigated here via the novel ‘batwing’ otter board and ‘soft-brush’ ground gear.

Traditional vs. novel ground gears: Maximising the environmental performance of penaeid trawls
Fisheries Research, 2015Abstract The engineering and catching performances of four penaeid-trawl ground gears (all 6.95 m) were compared using a 4.41-m beam-trawl assembly designed to eliminate the confounding effects of other trawl components. Three ground gears comprised either 6- (4.5 and 3.80 kg in air and water), 8- (8.42 and 6.88 kg) or 10-mm (13.07 and 11.20 kg ...

OIL-TREATED STEEL AND GROUND GEARS
SAE Technical Paper Series, 1924<div class="htmlview paragraph">The Cadillac Company has used S.A.E. 3250 steel for at least 8 years. This is medium nickel-chromium steel. Many other kinds have also been tried. Experience has shown that transmission gears made of carburized steel are not within 30 per cent as accurate as those made of oil-treated steel.

Analysis of efficiency of spur ground gears and the influence of running-in
Tribology International, 2016High-performing gear transmissions are needed to reduce CO2 emissions. In this paper an FZG gear test rig was used to investigate how two running-in loads affects the gear mesh efficiency for two d ...
