Effects of DC Ground Electrode on Converter Transformers

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 1989
DC transmission systems are normally equipped with a DC ground electrode for emergency or normal operation with or without ground return. In all cases, the DC ground stabilizes the DC voltage. During operation with ground return, a DC ground potential rise occurs at the DC ground electrode and DC voltage is transferred to the station ground.

Improved Mesh Grounding Electrode Model by Changing Arrangements of Internal Conductors of the Mesh Grounding Electrode

Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, 2010
Mesh grounding electrodes in Korea and abroad are designed as lattice-shaped equidistance grounding grids. In case of a lattice-shaped grounding Grid, however, there is a problem of higher touch voltage at the corner of the grid relative to the center.

Transient thermal behaviour of ground electrodes Part II: Cylindrical electrodes

Journal of Engineering Mathematics, 1968
The transient thermal behaviour of spherical electrodes carrying direct current has been analysed by classical methods. Formal solutions have been obtained for two cases; one involving concentric spheres, the other a single sphere in an infinite medium.

Transient Ground Impedances According to Shapes of Grounding Electrodes

Journal of the Korean Institute of Illuminating and Electrical Installation Engineers, 2006
This paper presents the transient behaviors of grounding system impedance against lightning impulse currents. The dynamic characteristics of the deeply driven ground rod and grounding grid subjected to the impulse current were investigated. The transient ground impedance strongly depends on the configuration and size of grounding electrodes and the ...

Time Domain Analysis of Grounding Electrodes' Impulse Response

IEEE Power Engineering Review, 2002
Lightning protection studies require estimation of grounding systems' dynamic behavior. This paper presents the results of a new methodology for calculating the lightning response of the basic component of any grounding system, the grounding electrode. Lightning strike is modeled using a double exponential time function.

Corrosion assessment of a ground electrode in contact with ground enhancing compounds

2010 30th International Conference on Lightning Protection (ICLP), 2010
Although a ground enhancing compound of a grounding system main purpose is to discharge electrical current to ground, however, it overlooks the fact that it can suffer chemical degradation due to the contact of the ground electrode with the compound, as the latter is not a chemically inert material.

Calculation of Impulse Grounding Resistance of Extended Grounding Electrode

2013
In order to calculate the impulse grounding resistance of extended grounding electrode accurately, this paper introduces a method for computing the impulse grounding resistance based on the spark discharge characteristic of the earth, using a nonlinear differential circuit model. The relation curves of impulse grounding resistance with the current peak

Modelling and design of ground electrodes

2009 International Conference on Power Engineering, Energy and Electrical Drives, 2009
This keynote lecture overviews the modeling techniques for computer simulation of ground electrodes behavior, and discusses the design of tower footing and substation grounding systems. Their performance as regards safety as well outage rate is discussed. A comprehensive bibliographical survey is provided.
