Unleashing the Power of Machine Learning in Nanomedicine Formulation Development

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A random forest machine learning model is able to make predictions on nanoparticle attributes of different nanomedicines (i.e. lipid nanoparticles, liposomes, or PLGA nanoparticles) based on microfluidic formulation parameters. Machine learning models are based on a database of nanoparticle formulations, and models are able to generate unique solutions

STONE-GROUND WOOD PULP-REINFORCED POLYPROPYLENE COMPOSITES: WATER UPTAKE AND THERMAL PROPERTIES

open access: yesBioResources, 2012
Two of the drawbacks of using natural-based composites in industrial applications are thermal instability and water uptake capacity. In this work, mechanical wood pulp was used to reinforce polypropylene at a level of 20 to 50 wt. %. Composites were mixed by means of a Brabender internal mixer for both non-coupled and coupled formulations. Differential

Multiscale Structuring of Hydroxyapatite via Two‐Photon Lithography of Nanocomposites

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Hydroxyapatite scaffolds are of great interest in bone tissue engineering applications, ranging from 3D cell culture to regenerative medicine. Using two‐photon lithography of a transparent nanocomposite, hydroxyapatite microstructures with features ranging from submicron to centimeter‐scale are fabricated. This allows to mimic the natural bone geometry,

Coffee Grounds as an Additive to Wood Pellets

open access: yesEnergies
The immense popularity of coffee around the world generates significant amounts of coffee grounds. They are often improperly disposed of, which can have a negative impact on the environment. Due to their chemical composition and physical properties, coffee grounds are an excellent bioenergy material.

DNA‐Templated 2D Heterostructures as Phototriggered Dynamic Nanohybrids: From Releasing Molecular Loads to Controlling Enzyme Biocatalytic Function

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DNA strands are employed both as dynamic linkers and nanoscale templates for the integration of Ag2S nanoparticles on MoS2, which in turn imparted photothermal responsiveness; this feature permits the selective cargo (fluorophore, quantum dots or an enzyme) release from the MoS2 surface in response to local heat induced by light irradiation.

Viscoelasticity‐Induced Controllable Periodic Meso‐Textures of Liquid Crystal Polymers in Additive Manufacturing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Viscoelasticity‐driven instabilities are harnessed to create tunable, periodic textures in 3D‐printed liquid crystalline polymers. This study illustrates how processing parameters control these spontaneous meso‐scale patterns. These unique structural architectures unlock new possibilities for functional devices, ranging from photonic components to ...

Cultural treatments and woody debris: the study case of beech forests in Casentino (Italy)

open access: yesForest@, 2009
This paper shows the first results about quantity and quality of dead wood on the ground in beech forests of Foreste Casentinesi, Monte Falterona and Campigna National Park. The presence of dead wood depends on several factors such as forest productivity,

Switchable Supramolecular Adhesive by Tuning Interfacial Bonding and Modulus

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The supramolecular adhesive (HyDiP) shows reversible adhesion and recyclability. In the dehydrated state, it is dense, stiff (E ≈445 MPa), transparent, and provides strong bonding with adhesion strengths up to 4.65 MPa. In the hydrated state, it becomes porous, soft (E ≈0.11 MPa), and detaches easily, enabling sustainable high‐strength applications ...
