An Autonomous System for Evaluating Groundfish Populations: the Ocean Groundfish Observatory
2006No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Overfishing and possibly unfavorable environmental conditions have resulted in the depletion of New England groundfish stocks. With the implementation of strict fisheries regulations including seasonal and annual closures, some stocks, e.g., haddock and redfish are recovering, while ...

An assessment of vulnerability in Alaska groundfish
Fisheries Research, 2011Federal fishery management rules in the United States have recently changed, necessitating an examination of which fish stocks require annual catch limits and how appropriate stock complexes are formed. We used an analytical approach termed productivity–susceptibility analysis (PSA) to analyze the vulnerability of federally managed Alaska groundfish ...

Herding in groundfish and effective pathwidth of trawls
Fisheries Research, 1995Abstract The swept area method requires quantitative information on the effective pathwidth W eff of a trawl to estimate absolute densities of groundfish. Herding of some groundfish by the bridles, sweeps and doors of a trawl will extend W eff beyond that of the net proper and limits applicability of that method.

Alaska groundfish: A financial feasibility analysis
Ocean Development & International Law, 1981Abstract This article reports the financial feasibility of several Alaska groundfish production options that are currently being considered by the U.S. fishing and processing industry. General conclusions are that, at present prices, the options examined are only marginally attractive investments. A 25‐percent increase in the wholesale prices of frozen

Carmel Finley reflects on her developing interest in fish and fisheries, particularly in postwar fisheries science. Beginning her career as a journalist, she wrote stories about fishing that were often based on information she had been told—much of which later proved to be inaccurate.

Japanese Markets for Groundfish
1991The passage of the Magnuson Act in 1976 led to such rapid growth of the US high seas fishing fleet operating in the Gulf of Alaska and the Bering Sea that the once prolific foreign fishing fleets have been completely eliminated. Perhaps over 75 percent of the groundfish now taken by US vessels from the North Pacific is exported to Japan.
